THE PRIMARY PURPOSE OF ABNS IS TO CONDUCT EXAMINATIONS OF CANDIDATES WHO VOLUNTARILY SEEK CERTIFICATION, AND TO ISSUE CERTIFICATES TO THOSE WHO MEET THE REQUIRMENTS OF THE BOARD.

THE PRIMARY PURPOSES OF THE AMERICAN BOARD OF NEUROLOGICAL SURGERY (ABNS) ARE TO CONDUCT EXAMINATIONS OF CANDIDATES WHO VOLUNTARILY SEEK CERTIFICATION AND TO ISSUE CERTIFICATES TO THOSE WHO MEET THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE BOARD AND SATISFACTORILY COMPLETE ITS EXAMINATIONS.
THE WRITTEN PRIMARY EXAMINATION WAS GIVEN ONCE IN 2018, 219 TOOK IT FOR CREDIT AND 196 PASSED. THE ORAL EXAMINATION WAS ADMINISTERED TWICE DURING 2018 WITH A TOTAL OF 224 CANDIDATES BEING CERTIFIED. THERE ARE CURRENTLY 5,986 ACTIVE DIPLOMATES. ABNS HAS CERTIFIED OVER 7,570 DIPLOMATES SINCE ITS FOUNDING IN 1940.
