The Northstar Problem Gambling Alliance works to raise public awareness about problem gambling and the stigma that's often associated with it. We advocate for funding for treatment programs and provide professional training for those who work with problem gamblers. The collective impact of our efforts help individuals, their families and their communities deal with the devastating effects of problem gambling.
The Northstar Problem Gambling Alliance is a non-profit, gambling-neutral organization dedicated to improving the lives of Minnesotans affected by problem gambling. NPGA is a coalition of individuals and organizations sharing the belief that problem gambling is a serious public health problem that is both treatable and preventable.
STATEMENT OF ACCOMPLISHMENTS FY 2019-2020This fiscal year will be forever marked as pre-COVID-19 vs living with COVID-19. The year started with NPGA traveling throughout the state to present and exhibit at professional mental health/behavioral health conferences discussing the high prevalence of co-addictions amongst gamblers and those who have substance use disorders and/or depression/anxiety. NPGA continues to broaden public awareness to the risks of problem gambling particularly among teens, young adults, military personnel/veterans, and older women. Fast changing technologies and expansion of sports betting and online gambling/gaming are presenting new challenges to educate the public, legislators and healthcare providers. Just before the state shutdown NPGA testified before a senate committee advocating for consumer protections to be built into the proposed sports betting bill. We remain neutral on gambling legalization and will always raise a voice to protect the vulnerable. With the onset of COVID-19, casinos shut down and gamblers turned to online gambling sites. NPGA played a role in urging DHS to permit telehealth counseling for problem gambling. Additionally, NPGA offered a free subscription to any Minnesotan wishing to place an online gambling blocking app on their phone, computer and tablets.NPGA completed three research studies specifically relating to gambling prevalence in Minnesota. One study examined gambling in the Lao community, another reviewed and analyzed the gambling data recorded on the triannual, 2019 MN Student Survey and another surveyed Minnesota gamblers and measured their ability to understand the risks and responsibilities associated with gambling, resulting in a Positive Play Score. All of these projects help to inform future prevention and messaging campaigns conducted throughout the year, including the annual Problem Gambling Awareness Month (March) and the Lottery Holiday Campaign, discouraging adults from purchasing lottery tickets as gifts for minors. We continued publishing our quarterly newsletter, Northern Light, which reaches over 8000 readers and increased our advertising budget for digital media ads and other traditional publications to promote telehealth, screening for problem gambling and gambling responsibly.
