Organizations Filed Purposes: Fostering youth development through social enterprise. Provide employment readiness training integrated with career pathway building support designed to meet unique needs of metro Twin Cities area young people experiencing homelessness or unstable housing.

Elpis Enterprises operate social enterprises to provide employment readiness training specifically designed to meet the needs of young people between 16&23 years of age who are experiencing homelessness or unstable housing. By focusing on the development of employment readiness (soft) skills, trainees are prepared to be successful in any workplace setting or career path. Our social enterprises allow us to use the power of the small business environment in preparing trainees for the broader labor market. This includes: a)offering trainees a full entrepreneurial experience; b) providing trainees with a paid work experience in a supportive and hands-on learning environment. Our career counseling guides trainees in developing a career pathway that aligns with their interests and the local labor market needs. Our social enterprises are: 1)a full-service customized screen printing & embroidery business; 2)a product centered woodworking business (bird feeders & other products from donated recycled cedar fences) 3)an e-commerce site (users can design their own screenprinting product or purchase one of several ready-made products that support Elpis and other Twin Cities nonprofit organizations. Additionally, each year our trainees facilitate 120-150 community based experiential screen printing or woodworking workshops with 3,000 attendees each year. Of these attendees, most are school-aged youth. In 2020, we worked with 25 trainees. Of trainees who completed our program: -88% achieved meaningful outcomes, which are defined as obtaining immediate post-Elpis employment and/or continuing with their education related to their career goals. -80% improved and/or achieved proficiency in employment readiness skills identified by the US Dept of Labor as forming a basis for any career pathway. 95% of trainees would recommend our program to others. For development of connections with others, among trainees completing our program especially strong changes were reported by trainees in: a)knowing how to make the community a better place; b) having the skills and knowledge to mentor other youth;c) having build a network and felt connected to the community.
