Organizations Filed Purposes: Enriching the world by cultivating soil and community in Frogtown

Farm Production:2019 was Frogtown Farm's 4th full year of farm production. We cultivated 5.5 acres of organic annual vegetables for sales and distribution at our market stand on-site, to wholesale customers, at a farmer's market, to local restaurants and entrepreneurs and for donations to program participants, neighbors and our community food shelf. This food reached hundreds of community members. We also grew vegetables in the hoop house. We harvested from thousands of perennial plants in a permaculture design that will bear fruit for decades to come, including: asparagus, aronia berries, honey berries, and plum, apple, pear, and cherry trees. We maintained our water management system with a number of environmental benefits, including reducing stormwater run-off, preventing soil erosion and limiting our use of municipal water. Farm production serves as an education and community building tool. We had approximately 513 people contribute over 3,100 hours of volunteers labor and education on-site. We grew over 60 different crops and grew over 16,000 pounds of organic produce in this fourth season of farm production.

Community Outreach & Education: Frogtown Farm is a community-based organization founded by four community residents. Community engagement is critical to our decision-marking, design, programming and food production. In 2019, we worked with community members and partners to cultivate relationships, build partnership and do neighborhood outreach through canvassing, attending events, hosting events. We are also working with several key community partners to develop a long-term plan to build a stronger and sovereign community food system. We hosted four monthly community events that brought together community members, community resources, free giveaways, artists, music and more. Four community events drew over 2,000 people. We also hosted tours, school groups and workshops. Through this outreach, thousands of people across generations and cultures had the opportunity to visit Frogtown Farm and learn more about Urban agriculture. We had 513 volunteers working on the farm, doing everything from seeding, weeding, watering to social media posting and filing. Overall, through the produce distribution, farm visits, community events community programming and outreach, Frogtown Farm estimates that we reached over 15,00 people in 2019.

Frogtown Farm Workshare Program: The Frogtown Farm workshare program is an education and community engagement component of our urban farm. The workshare program enables Frogtown and Rondo residents to work on the farm for at least two hours each week for ten weeks during the growing season. Participants received fresh produce from the farm each week in exchange for their time working on the farm, and the exchange equated to $15/hr of produce that community members in the program received for free. The workshare program uses a skill share approach to knowledge building for everything from planting, weeding, maintaining and harvesting produce grown at the farm.
