The Healing Justice Foundation (HJF) was established in March of 2020 and is a national philanthropic non-profit with roots in Minnesota. Dr. Joi Lewis is its founder and president. HJF exists to support the healing of Black people and communities, and its work is based on the belief that those most impacted by trauma know what support they need to heal. It is also informed by the founder's personal healing journey from trauma.

Healing Programs: In 2020, through the support of foundations and individuals, HJF operated four healing programs: 1) Hollering to Healing Grant: Provides financial and educational resources to Black individuals and families to work toward healing and is grounded in the principles of mutual aid. 2) Radical Self Care: Provides access to complimentary or discounted complimentary or discounted individual and community healing sessions. 3) Black Joi Grant: Provides financial support for Black families and individuals to access housing, food or basic supplies. 4) Black Girls Heal: Addresses the emotional and physical disparities that result from the historical, contemporary, and regional oppression and its subsequent isolation of Black women and girls. In many instances these health disparities have devastating and sometimes fatal outcomes for cisgender and non-binary Black women and girls. These programs provided approximately 300 Black individuals with the necessary resources to determine their own healing journey. This was not about prescribing what should be done. But letting the wisdom of individuals and communities determine what was needed.
Time of Reckoning In addition, HJF launched Time of Reckoning, Healing, Listening and Healing (Time of Reckoning) in response to the murder of George Floyd by the hands of Minneapolis Police department and surrounding events, which catalyzed broad and urgent interest toward structural change in policing and our larger criminal justice system. The proliferation of interest and activity in transforming criminal justice created an opportunity for dramatic change centered on those most impacted. Time of Reckoning consists of five critical community healing and policy action engagements that aim to illustrate to the nation what community-centered policy change can look like. Each session is structured like a congressional hearing with scripted narratives from community members, questions from policy makers, and a live work session with the goal of developing tangible actions and bold visions for Black futures. The first Time of Reckoning forum took place virtually in December and focused on the experience of Black women and girls in the criminal justice system and its collateral consequences. 2,500 people attended the forum through Zoom or Facebook Live stream.
