Organizations Filed Purposes: THE MISSION OF MAICC IS TO ADDRESS THE EARLY CHILDHOOD NEEDS AND ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT GAP OF AMERICAN INDIAN CHILDREN THROUGH REVITALIZING LANGUAGE AND CULTURE.

IT IS THE VISION OF THE MONTESSORI AMERICAN INDIAN CHILDCARE CENTER (MAICC) TO BE THE "PREMIER MODEL OF EARLY CHILDHOOD OPPORTUNITY FOR THE AMERICAN INDIAN COMMUNITY". THE MISSION OF MAICC IS TO ADDRESS THE EARLY CHILDHOOD NEEDS AND ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT GAP OF AMERICAN INDIAN CHILDREN THROUGH REVITILIZING LANGUAGE AND CULTURE. MAICC IS THE ONLY AMERICAN INDIAN DIRECTED AND MANAGED PRESCHOOL FOR NATIVE CHILDREN IN ST. PAUL. CULTURALLY SPECIFIC EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES GROUNDED IN CULTURE AND INDIGENOUS LANGUAGE ARE ABSENT IN MAINSTREAM EARLY LEARNING PROGRAMS FOR AMERICAN INDIAN CHILDREN. AMERICAN INDIAN CHILDREN HAVE LIMITED ACCESS TO CULTURALLY SPECIFIC EARLY LEARNING AND MANY FAMILIES LACK THE FINANCIAL STABILITY TO ACCESS QUALITY EARLY LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES FOR THEIR CHILDREN. MAICC FILLS THAT GAP.

WE OPERATE AS A PRESCHOOL. ALL OF OUR WORK IS FOCUSED ON PROVIDING A LONG-TERM PRE-SCHOOL OPPORTUNITY TO THE CHILDREN THAT WE SERVE. THE OVERALL PURPOSE OF MAICC IS TO PROVIDE ACCESS TO A QUALITY EARLY LEARNING EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITY GROUNDED IN AMERICAN INDIAN CULTURE AND LANGUAGE FOR CHILDREN 3-6 YEARS OF AGE. MAICC SERVES AMERICAN INDIAN CHILDREN, WHERE THE DISPARITY GAP IN EDUCATION BEGINS BEFORE PRE-SCHOOL AND THE ACHIEVEMENT GAP CONTINUES TO WIDEN AS CHILDREN PROGRESS THROUGH SCHOOL. MAICC SEEKS TO BREAK THE CYCLE OF DISADVANTAGE FOR AMERICAN INDIAN CHILDREN AND TO PREVENT THE CYCLE OF INEQUITY. MAICC OFFERS PLANNED ACTIVITIES AND AREAS OF CURRICULUM FOR THE CHILDREN, WHICH INCLUDS THE FOLLOWING: PRACTICAL LIFE - ENHANCING THE DEVELOPMENT OF TASK ORGANIZATION AND COGNITIVE ORDER THROUGH CARE OF SELF, CARE OF THE ENVIRONMENT, GRACE AND COURTESY, AND MOVEMENT. SENSORIAL - ENABLING THE CHILD TO ORDER, CLASSIFY, AND DESCRIBE SENSORY IMPRESSIONS SUCH AS LENGTH, WIDTH, TEMPERATURE, MASS, COLOR, PITCH AND TASTE. LANGUAGE - DEVELOPING SPOKEN LANGUAGE, WRITTEN EXPRESSION, READING, GRAMMAR, DRAMA AND CHILDREN'S LITERATURE. MATHEMATICS - USING MANIPULATIVE MATERIALS TO PRESENT CONCEPTS OF NUMBER, SYMBOL SEQUENCE, OPERATIONS AND THE MEMORIZATION OF BASIC FACTS. CULTURE AND THE ARTS - EXPOSING THE CHILD TO OUR WORLD, THE PEOPLE IN IT AND THEIR TRADITIONS THROUGH THE STUDY OF GEOGRAPHY, HISTORY, LIFE SCIENCES, AND THE ARTS. IN ADDITION TO THE MONTESSORI CURRICULUM, THE CHILDREN PARTICIPATE AND INTERACT DAILY WITH THE INDIGENOUS LANGUAGE GUIDE ONCE A WEEK. IN ADDITION, PARENT ENGAGEMENT IS CRITICAL TO THE EDUCATIONAL SUCCESS OF THE CHILDREN ATTENDING THE MONTESSORI AMERICAN INDIAN CHILDCARE CENTER. WE ENGAGE PARENTS IN OUR PROGRAM BY OFFERING CULTURALLY RESPONSIVE EARLY CHILDHOOD PARENTING SUPPORT. OUR OVERALL OBJECTIVES ARE TO: 1. TO BUILD THE CHILDREN'S ACADEMIC SKILLS IN PREPARATION FOR KINDERGARTEN;. 2: TO ENGAGE YOUNG CHILDREN IN STRENGTHENING THEIR CULTURAL WELLNESS THROUGH INDIGENOUS LANGUAGE ACQUISITION AND CULTURE; 3: TO PROVIDE OPPORTUNITIES FOR PARENTS TO DEVELOP AND STRENGTHEN THEIR LEADERSHIP SKILLS.
