GREAT RIVER CHILDREN'S MUSEUM SHINES A BRIGHT LIGHT ON THE POWER OF PLAY TO SPARK CHILDREN'S LEARNING, STRENGTHEN FAMILIES, AND BUILD COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS. ITS DYNAMIC, INTERACTIVE ENVIRONMENTS AND EXPERIENCES ARE A GATEWAY TO THE WORLD AND ITS PEOPLE FOR CHILDREN AND FAMILIES OF ALL BACKGROUNDS.
PLAY, EXPLORE, AND LEARN (PEL) LABS / FAMILY FUN CLUB:TWO SEPARATE IN-PERSON PEL LABS TOOK PLACE PRIOR TO THE PANDEMIC. IN ORDER TO KEEP EVERYONE SAFE ONCE THE PANDEMIC BEGAN, THE PEL LAB VOLUNTEERS SHIFTED THEIR FOCUS TOWARD CREATING ONLINE ACTIVITIES FOR CHILDREN AND ADULTS TO ENJOY IN AND AROUND THEIR HOME. THESE FAMILY FUN CLUB ACTIVITIES, AS THEY WERE CALLED, WERE POSTED WEEKLY THROUGHOUT THE SUMMER OF 2020 AND THEN MONTHLY THROUGH THE FALL AND WINTER MONTHS AND COVERED A VARIETY OF TOPICS FROM LITERACY TO SCIENCE TO SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING TO INCLUDE DIFFERENT AGE GROUPS FROM INFANTS AND TODDLERS THROUGH 10-12 YEAR OLDS. SEVENTEEN DIFFERENT ACTIVITIES WERE POSTED ONLINE DURING 2020.
ROUNDTABLES / COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT:TWO IN-PERSON ROUNDTABLE SESSIONS WITH EDUCATORS AND PARTNER NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS TOOK PLACE IN EARLY 2020, PRIOR TO THE PANDEMIC. ROUNDTABLES WERE CONVERTED TO A VIRTUAL FORMAT AND A THIRD SESSION WAS CONDUCTED WITH MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS AND SPECIAL EDUCATION PROFESSIONALS IN AUGUST. ADDITIONAL ROUNDTABLES WILL CONTINUE IN EARLY 2021.
TRAVELING EXHIBITS:GRCM RENTED A TRAVELING EXHIBIT CALLED STORYLAND FROM THE MINNESOTA CHILDREN'S MUSEUM AND WELCOMED OVER 40 CHILDREN AND THEIR CARING ADULTS TO VISIT THE EXHIBIT, FREE OF CHARGE AND IN A COVID SAFE MANNER THIS EXHIBIT HAD BEEN CONTRACTED TO RENT PRIOR TO THE PANDEMIC AND PROVIDED AN OPPORTUNITY FOR STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS TO PRACTICE ASSEMBLING A TRAVELING EXHIBIT IN THE CURRENT BUILDING SPACE. IT ALSO PROVIDED AN OPPORTUNITY TO DEVELOP COVID RELATED POLICIES FOR MUSEUM VISITORS.
