St. Cloud Area Family YMCA's mission is to put Christian principles into practice through programs that promote healthy lifestyles, strong families and positive youth development to build healthy spirit, mind and body for all, regardless of ability to pay. The St. Cloud Area Family YMCA was founded by volunteers, was chartered with the YMCA of the USA and incorporated in the state of Minnesota in 1969. The YMCA seeks to meet the needs of the St. Cloud community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility by providing life changing programs to all ages, incomes, genders, races, faiths and abilities. Everyone is invited to become a member of the Y.
St. Cloud Area Family YMCA's mission is to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all.
Social Responsibility Everyone is invited to become a member of the Y. Our scholarship program helps those in need become active members of our community. As a community, we help these members reach their full potential. Qualified members receive up to a 60% reduction on memberships and 50% on programs. In appreciation of Minnesota's 10,000 lakes, we train lifeguards who can serve our pools and water recreation areas to ensure safety in water. Our YMCA is the only Y in Minnesota (and only one of 2 in the nation) that provides a Supervised Visitation program. This program allows separated families to reunite in a safe, supervised environment. We offer parenting classes to help families grow and nurture healthy relationship habits. We also have an on-staff chaplain and volunteer pastors who are committed to inspiring a spirit of service by uniting individuals from all walks of life to participate in and work for positive social change. Our YMCA believes in giving back and supporting our neighbors. One of our community's critical social needs is met with our Supervised Visitation and Exchange program, which provides families - who are court ordered to have supervised visitations - with a positive, healthy environment in which to interact, at a place where family vulnerability is reduced. The YMCA is a safe environment for these exchanges/visits and offers more than a courthouse or attorney's office. Fractured families may have court ordered visitations to ensure the best experience for any child and family member involved. Non-custodial parents (or extended family members) can visit with their children in a neutral, controlled condition for a set period of time promoting positive interactions. We serve court-ordered cases from counties throughout the state as well as many private cases. All cases are supervised by social workers. We provide financial assistance to these families if they cannot afford the services of social workers and the cost of the supervision required for the visits. Thirty percent of all participants in court-ordered private visitations receive financial assistance. During 2020, 1,828 supervised visits and 435 exchanges were provided in our facility and 31 additional visits were provided virtually. Supervised Visits were subsidized by the YMCA in the amount of $22,069 in 2020.
Youth Development Everyone is invited to become a member of the Y. Children can begin their Y-experience in our Kid Zone at 6 weeks of age and continue to grow and develop friendships and life skills through their teen years. Youth build friendships and skills through swim lessons, birthday parties, day camp, youth sports, rock climbing, home school physical-education and being part of a swim team. Memberships are available to families and individual youth. From cradle to career, the Y provides all youth with the tools and resources they need to succeed in life. In 2020: 290 school children participated in Virtual Day camp while distance learning for school (new in 2020) *143 children were able to play in our facility or other designated venues with their family while supervised for their safety. (This program continued throughout the shutdowns, as it is an essential service.) *1,584 children participated in swimming lessons *952 children participated in Youth Sports & Tae Kwon Do *11,214 children visited our Kid Zone drop-in care center *420 children celebrated birthdays with their friends in our facility *187 children participated in our Y-Out programs *43 children attended our summer day camp & 95children participated in School Day Out camp during school holidays *185 children participated in our Home School Gym program *85 children swam and competed through our youth swim team While participating in each of these programs, children are learning important life lessons and skills that can be transferred to the classroom, workplace and beyond. From the water safety skills taught in swimming lessons, to the teamwork principles learned in sports and the friendship network gained in the Kid Zone and camps, the Y is helping our youth develop into healthy, engaged citizens.
Healthy Living Our YMCA is committed to nurturing the spirit, mind and body of every child, teen, and adult. We assist our community members in three ways. First, we provide programs targeted to increase health. This includes partnerships and programs for those who struggle with health issues, including multiple sclerosis, arthritis, and weight management. Through a partnership with CentraCare Health System, patients recovering from a cardiac-related health issue are transitioned to the Y for their cardiac rehabilitation program. The second way we assist our community is with our scholarship program. Members may join the YMCA and pay on a scale prorated to their ability to pay. We operate this program in a confidential way, in order to free our members from any possible social stigma. Using the criteria of the federal free lunch program, participants may pay as little as 40% of the normal costs for membership and/or program participation. Our scholarship program also assists students from local colleges and universities. During 2020, our YMCA provided 435 individual or family units with a scholarship for memberships and also subsidized the membership fees for 385 St. Cloud Technical and Community College students and nontraditional students, amounting to $235,109 of financial assistance for memberships alone. The YMCA also provided scholarships for swim lessons, swim team, youth sports, summer and vacation camp, home school fitness program participants and childcare in the amount of $8,251 and scholarships for our supervised visits program in the amount of $22,069. The third way we assist our community is through partnerships with community non-profits and schools. Participation in YMCA programs and facilities promotes social interaction, overall health, builds self-esteem and develops social networking relationships. Some of these collaborations include District 742 Schools, Place of Hope, Anna Marie's, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, 180 degrees, The Salvation Army, Terebinth Refuge, and various Preschool, Head Start and Early Childhood programs. We issued $24,010 of community outreach scholarships, which provides free access to families in transition homes such as Place of Hope and Anna Marie's, and over $701,320 of community discounts to ensure our programs are accessible, affordable, and open to all faiths, backgrounds, abilities and income levels. It is also our honor and privilege to provide free memberships for military (OIF/OEF) families while the service person is deployed. This allows full facility and program participation for the service member and their families. In total, our YMCA provided over $966,700 of scholarships and discounts in 2020. It is important to note that all members, including those receiving scholarships, receive discounted program rates (usually $20 per program). We want all our members to be full, active participants in our community.
