AS PART OF MAYO CLINIC, THE HEALTH SYSTEM OFFERS CARE DESIGNED FOR THE WHOLE BODY CLOSE TO THE PATIENT'S HOME, WHEN THEY NEED IT. A MULTIDISCIPLINARY TEAM OF EXPERTS HAS READY ACCESS TO KNOWLEDGE, RESOURCES, AND EXPERTISE OF MAYO CLINIC AND COLLABORATES ON PROVIDING EXACTLY THE CARE THE PATIENT NEEDS. MAYO CLINIC HEALTH SYSTEM SITES EMPLOY APPROXIMATELY 1,000 PHYSICIANS AND 15,000 ALLIED HEALTH STAFF. IN ADDITION, MAYO CLINIC PHYSICIANS FROM MULTIPLE SPECIALTIES REGULARLY SEE PATIENTS AT HEALTH SYSTEM FACILITIES. BESIDES HAVING HEALTH CARE FACILITIES IN NEARLY 70 COMMUNITIES, MAYO CLINIC HEALTH SYSTEM INCLUDES 19 OWNED HOSPITALS, FIVE OWNED NURSING HOMES, PHYSICIAN SERVICE AGREEMENTS WITH ONE ADDITIONAL HOSPITAL, AND CONTRACT MANAGEMENT AGREEMENTS WITH TWO ADDITIONAL HOSPITALS AND ONE NURSING HOME. SINCE ITS INCEPTION IN 1992, MAYO CLINIC HEALTH SYSTEM HAS GROWN INTO ONE OF THE MOST SUCCESSFUL REGIONAL HEALTH CARE SYSTEMS IN THE UNITED STATES. MORE THAN 600,000 UNIQUE PATIENTS ACCOUNT FOR MORE THAN 2.6 MILLION VISITS ANNUALLY IN MAYO CLINIC HEALTH SYSTEM. IT IS ALSO A NATIONAL LEADER IN QUALITY AND SAFETY EFFORTS.MAYO CLINIC HEALTH SYSTEM - ST. JAMES IS A CRITICAL ACCESS HOSPITAL LOCATED IN ST. JAMES THAT IS PART OF THE MAYO CLINIC HEALTH SYSTEM. THERE WERE APPROXIMATELY 2,900 PATIENTS TREATED IN THE EMERGENCY ROOM IN 2014, WHICH IS OPEN 24 HOURS A DAY. IN 2014, MCHS - ST. JAMES ADMITTED OVER 240 PATIENTS. MCHS - ST. JAMES OPERATES PRIMARY CARE CLINICS IN ST. JAMES AND TRIMONT. MCHS - ST. JAMES SERVED OVER 25,000 CLINIC VISITS.UNCOMPENSATED CARE: MCHS - ST. JAMES PROVIDES CARE TO PERSONS COVERED BY GOVERNMENTAL PROGRAMS. SERVICES ARE PROVIDED TO BOTH MEDICARE AND MEDICAID PATIENTS/RESIDENTS AT SUBSTANTIAL DISCOUNTS FROM STANDARD FEES. MCHS - ST. JAMES IS DESIGNATED AS A CRITICAL ACCESS HOSPITAL AND IS REIMBURSED BASED ON ITS COST OF PROVIDING SERVICES FOR HOSPITAL MEDICARE PATIENTS.CHARITY CARE IS ALSO PROVIDED FOR PATIENTS THAT ARE FINANCIALLY UNABLE TO PAY FOR SERVICES PROVIDED. THE COST OF CHARITY PROVIDED IN 2014 WAS APPROXIMATELY $91,500.MCHS - ST. JAMES ALSO PROVIDES DISCOUNTS TO UNINSURED PATIENTS. THE TOTAL DISCOUNTS GIVEN IN 2014 WERE $59,000.THE COST OF UNCOMPENSATED CARE IN 2014 PROVIDED TO LOW INCOME PATIENTS THROUGH MEDICAID AND OTHER GOVERNMENTAL PROGRAMS WAS APPROXIMATELY $381,000. INCLUDED IN THIS AMOUNT IS $204,543 PAID TO MINNESOTACARE (A PROGRAM THAT PROVIDES HEALTH CARE FOR LOW INCOME POPULATIONS) AND THE MEDICAID SURCHARGE OF $131,879.MCHS-ST. JAMES LEASES SPACE TO AFFILIATED ORGANIZATIONS TO HELP FURTHER THEIR EXEMPT PURPOSE OF PROVIDING PATIENT CARE.
COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT (SCHEDULE O) MCHS - ST. JAMES PARTICIPATED IN NUMEROUS COMMUNITY INITIATIVES IN 2014. AREAS OF INTERACTION INCLUDE: COMMUNITY EDUCATION SEMINARS AND FORUMS, HEALTH SCREENINGS AT THE COUNTY FAIR, BIKE SAFETY AWARENESS TRAINING, DIABETIC SUPPORT GROUP, FOOD DRIVES AND OTHERS. THE ESTIMATED COST OF THE ABOVE PROGRAMS WAS $10,000 IN 2014.VOLUNTEER SERVICES: IN 2014, MAYO CLINIC HEALTH SYSTEM - ST. JAMES VOLUNTEER SERVICES MAINTAINED A MEMBERSHIP OF 10 VOLUNTEERS. DURING 2014, VOLUNTEERS DONATED 1,739 HOURS OF VOLUNTEER SERVICE TO THE LOCAL MEDICAL CENTER AND RELATED PROGRAMS VALUED AT APPROXIMATELY $40,100 BASED ON THE INDEPENDENT SECTORS AVERAGE ESTIMATED VALUE OF SUCH SERVICES.
