The Givens Foundation is dedicated to enriching cultural understanding and learning through programs that advance and celebrate African American literature and writers.
Sprited Minds and Strong Souls Singing-The Givens Foundations education program, is committed to being an innovative solution that supports Minnesotas academic standards for language arts and that helps to close the achievement gap for Twin Cities students. The program was developed in response to community requests and strategic mandate that the Foundation focus its activites and resources on enriching cultural understanding and enhancing the quality of education for learners by increasing their access to African American literature and writers, by leveraging the rich local artistic community, as well as drawing on historic works within the Givens Collection of African American Literature at the University of Minesota and the African American literary tradition.
The Givens Foundation for African American Literature hosted its annual Givens Black Books, a community reading campaign that increases access to and engagement in the AfricanAmerican literary arts in the Twin Cities community. Each year, Givens Black Books engages the community in celebrating the literary career and contributions of a notable African American author.
