Organizations Filed Purposes: IT IS THE MISSION OF DOWN SYNDROME ASSOCIATION OF MINNESOTA TO EMPOWER INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES, TO CREATE COMMUNITY AND CELEBRATE THE ABILITIES OF PEOPLE WITH DOWN SYNDROME. OUR VISION IS FOR ALL PEOPLE WITH DOWN SYNDROME TO ACHIEVE THEIR FULLEST POTENTIAL IN AN ACCEPTING AND INCLUSIVE COMMUNITY.

OUR STEP UP FOR DOWN SYNDROME WALK CONTINUES TO BE THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE YEAR FOR MANY OF OUR FAMILIES. IT IS ONE OF THE LARGEST PUBLIC AWARENESS/CELEBRATORY WALKS IN THE COUNTRY PROMOTING ACCEPTANCE OF INDIVIDUALS WITH DOWN SYNDROME. IN 2018 A WALK WAS HELD IN COMO PARK IN ST. PAUL DRAWING 5,000 COMMUNITY MEMBERS TOGETHER TO CELEBRATE THE LIVES OF THOSE WITH DOWN SYNDROME. A NEW FAMILY TENT WAS SET UP AND HOSTED BY BOARD MEMBERS, STAFF AND SELF ADVOCATES TO WELCOME NEW MEMBERS TO DSAMN. MAJOR SPONSORS OF THE WALK HAD INFORMATION BOOTHS AVAILABLE FOR FAMILIES TO GATHER RESOURCES. WORLD DOWN SYNDROME DAY CELEBRATION IS A FREE ANNUAL EVENT AT THE MALL OF AMERICA TO CELEBRATE THE ABILITIES OF PEOPLE WITH DOWN SYNDROME. WE CONTINUE ONGOING ADVOCACY AND AWARENESS EFFORTS WITH ORGANIZATIONS WHOSE ACTIONS AND POLICIES AFFECT OUR MEMBERS LIKE MINNESOTA DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION, DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN SERVICES, COUNTY OFFICES AND OTHERS.

OUR MISSION STATEMENT CALLS FOR SUPPORT, INFORMATION AND RESOURCES TO PARENTS AND INDIVIDUALS WITH DOWN SYNDROME. THE INITIAL SUPPORT IS ACCOMPLISHED THROUGH OUR INFORMATION KITS WHICH ARE AVAILABLE IN ALL HOSPITALS IN MN THAT HAVE BIRTH CENTERS AND THROUGH GENETIC COUNSELORS. PARENTS ARE SUPPORTED BY DSAMN AT THE MOMENT THE CONTACT IS MADE WITH US. TWO DEDICATED STAFF MEMBERS HANDLE CALLS FROM NEW AS WELL AS EXPECTANT PARENTS. RESOURCES ARE SENT THEM IMMEDIATELY UPON THE DIAGNOSIS BEING MADE, CONNECTIONS ARE MADE AND OUR NEW PARENT GIFTS ARE FORWARDED TO THEM WELCOMING THEM TO THE DOWN SYNDROME ASSOCIATION OF MINNESOTA. INFORMATIONAL PUBLICATIONS INCLUDE DOWN COMFORTER: A PARENT'S GUIDE TO DOWN SYNDROME FOR NEW AND EXPECTANT PARENTS; SHARING THE NEWS: A DIAGNOSIS OF DOWN SYNDROME FOR MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS; AND WE DREAM WHICH INCLUDES INFORMATION AND FACTS FOR THE BROADER COMMUNITY TO BETTER UNDERSTAND DOWN SYNDROME. WE PROVIDE ONGOING OUTREACH AND SUPPORT TO THE MEDICAL COMMUNITY TO PROVIDE ACCURATE INFORMATION AND RESOURCES FOR FAMILIES NEW TO OUR COMMUNMITY. WE SUPPORT 19 PHYSICAL PARENT GROUPS THROUGHOUT THE REGION AND EACH OF THE GROUPS HAS A FACE BOOK PAGE FOR GROUP MEMBERS TO COMMUNICATE WITH EACH OTHER. THESE GROUPS HAVE A DEDICATED STAFF MEMBER WHO TRAINS THE FACILITATORS, SUPPORTS THEM IN ALL AREAS OF ADMINISTRATIVE AND CLERICAL NEEDS. DSAMN ALSO HOSTS SPECIALTY SUPPORT GROUPS SUCH AS ADULTS MATTER, DUAL DIAGNOSIS, SOMALI MOMS, AND GRANDPARENT GROUPS. PARENT TO PARENT CONNECTION IS A SERVICE THAT MATCHES NEW OR EXPECTANT PARENTS THROUGH ONE ON ONE CONVERSATIONS AND MENTORSHIP WITH PARENTS WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED THEIR SAME FEELINGS, STRUGGLES AND CELEBRATIONS. WE PROVIDE ENGAGEMENT AND NETWORKING OPPORTUNITIES FOR FAMILIES THROUGH OUR OWN NEW PARENT BREAKFAST, SUMMER PICNIC, FALL FAMILY CELEBRATION AND ICAN SHINE BIKE CAMPS AND PROGRAMS OFFERED BY OUR PARTNERS LIKE ARC, THE MINNESOTA CHILDREN'S MUSEUM, GIGI'S PLAYHOUSE, JACK'S BASKET, SPECIAL OLYMPICS AND OTHERS.

ONGOING EDUCATION TO ALL FAMILIES AS WELL AS THOSE WHO SUPPORT PEOPLE WITH DOWN SYNDROME IN OTHER AREAS IS PROVIDED THROUGH OUT MANY CONFERENCES: YEARLY CONFERENCES ARE HELD FOR GRANDPARENTS; YOUNG ADULTS AND ADULTS WITH DOWN SYNDROME AS WELL AS A CONFERENCE FOR THEIR PARENTS AND SIBLINGS; EDUCATORS HAVE A DAY DEDICATED TO TOPICS SPECIFIC TO THEIR NEEDS.
