THE EAST SIDE LEARNING CENTER STRIVES TO BE A MAJOR FORCE IN UNLOCKING EACH CHILD'S POTENTIAL THROUGH THE FOUNDATION OF READING.
DESPITE ENDING SERVICES EARLY DUE TO THE PANDEMIC, 567 CHILDREN PARTICIPATEDIN EAST SIDE LEARNING CENTER'S READING TUTORING AND MENTORING PROGRAMS. OF CHILDREN WHO PARTICIPATED 30 HOURS OR MORE AND WHO WERE ASSESSED TWICE:* 83% (125/150) OF PRE-K AND KINDERGARTEN CHILDREN WERE ON TARGET IN READING. 66% (105/159) OF ELEMENTARY CHILDREN ATTAINED THEIR READING GROWTH GOALS. SOCIAL EMOTIONAL OUTCOMES WERE NOT AVAILABLE DUE TO THE PANDEMIC. THE READING GROWTH OF EACH CHILD WAS MADE POSSIBLE BY 185 VOLUNTEERS WHO PROVIDED 15,466 ONE-ON-ONE LITERACY MENTORING SESSIONS TOTALING 7,425 HOURS. ESLC REORGANIZED INTO TWO DISTINCT PROGRAMS. THE PREVENTATIVE PROGRAM PREPARES PRE-KINDERGARTEN AND KINDERGARTEN CHILDREN FOR SCHOOL SO THEY DON'T FALL BEHIND. THE INTERVENTION PROGRAM IS DESIGNED TO HELP FIRST THROUGH THIRD GRADE CHILDREN CATCH UP TO READING LEVEL SO THEY HAVE THE SKILLS TO SUCCEED IN SCHOOL, GRADUATE, AND CHOOSE THEIR OWN FUTURES. SERVICES ARE FOR CHILDREN WHO ARE BEHIND IN READING ONLY. ADDITIONALLY, ESLC ACQUIRED THE AARP FOUNDATION EXPERIENCE CORPS PROGRAM IN SEPTEMBER 2019. THIS INTERGENERATIONAL VOLUNTEER TUTORING PROGRAM THAT IS PROVEN TO HELP CHILDREN WHO AREN'T READING AT GRADE LEVEL BECOME GREAT READERS BY THE END OF THIRD GRADE. IN THIS PROGRAM, ESLC INSPIRES AND EMPOWERS ADULTS, 50 AND OLDER, TO VOLUNTEER AS TUTORS WITH THE GOAL TO DISRUPT THE CYCLE OF POVERTY BY MAKING A LASTING DIFFERENCE IN THE LIVES OF VULNERABLE CHILDREN. *STUDENT READING GROWTH DATA IS FOR THE PERIOD FROM SEPT. 1, 2019 TO JAN. 31, 2020, THE PERIOD FOR WHICH OUTCOME DATA WAS AVAILABLE.
