THE MISSION OF HALLIE Q. BROWN COMMUNITY CENTER, INC. IS TO IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF LIFE IN OUR COMMUNITY BY PROVIDING ACCESS TO CRITICAL HUMAN SERVICES, FOSTERING AND PROMOTING PERSONAL GROWTH, AND DEVELOPING COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP.
FOOD SHELF AND BASIC NEEDSIN 2019, FOOD SHELF SERVICES CONTINUED TO RESPOND TO THE DEMAND FOR NUTRITIOUS AND CULTURALLY APPROPRIATE CHOICES IN THE COMMUNITY AREA OFFERINGS. IN ADDITION TO TRADITIONAL CLIENT APPOINTMENTS, THIS DROP-IN OPTION WAS OPEN THREE DAYS A WEEK FOR ALL TO USE. THOUSANDS OF POUNDS OF HIGH QUALITY FRESH AND NUTRITIOUS PRODUCE COMPRISED A SUBSTANTIAL BENEFIT TO THOSE IN ADJACENT "FOOD DESERT" AREAS.BETWEEN THE TWO CORE SERVICES, OVER 360,000 POUNDS OF FOOD WERE DISTRIBUTED THROUGH THE YEAR AMONG NEARLY 35,000 PARTICIPANT VISITS. OTHER OFFERINGS SAW RECORD PARTICIPATION AS WELL: FOR EXAMPLE, OVER 1400 CHILDREN WERE SERVED THROUGH THE HALLIE'S TOY SHOP ANNUAL TOY DISTRIBUTION EVENT.THE CREATION OF THE NEW COMMUNITY SUPPORT NAVIGATOR ASSISTED THE ORGANIZATION IN ADDRESSING CLIENTS WHO WERE EXCEEDING THE NORMAL NUMBER OF VISITS BY HELPING TO ASSESS WHAT ADDITIONAL CHALLENGES THEY WERE DEALING WITH AND HELPING THEM CONNECT TO RESOURCES AND SERVICES. OVER RECENT YEARS, AN INCREASING NUMBER OF CLIENTS FOUND WAYS TO GIVE BACK TO THE CENTER: MORE PARTICIPANTS CAME IN FOR OTHER ACTIVITIES, INCLUDING JOBS TRAINING AND TECH CLASSES, AND INCREASING NUMBERS OF FORMER CLIENTS HAVE VOLUNTEERED AND DONATED SERVICES TO OTHERS IN THE PROGRAM.
YOUTH ENRICHMENTYOUTH ENRICHMENT PROGRAM (YEP) ENROLLMENTS WERE AT CAPACITY THROUGHOUT 2019, INCLUDING A SIGNIFICANT PROPORTION OF CHILDREN TRANSITIONING INTO SCHOOL AGE CARE FROM THE EARLY LEARNING CENTER. OFFERINGS INCLUDED BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL ENRICHMENT, SCHOOL RELEASE DAYS, AND A FULL SUMMER OF DAY-LONG EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING. STAFF TRAINING AND PROACTIVE, CULTURALLY APPROPRIATE CLASSROOM TECHNIQUES HAD A POSITIVE EFFECT ON STUDENT BEHAVIOR AND WELLNESS. IN PARTNERSHIP WITH SAINT PAUL PARKS & RECREATION, YEP STUDENTS CONTINUED ATTENDING REGULAR SESSIONS IN THE REC TECH COMPUTER LAB BEGINNING THROUGHOUT 2019. THE YEP PROGRAM WORKED WITH PARTNERS SUCH AS THE TEXTILE CENTER AND PROJECT CHEER, TO PROVIDE ENRICHING EXPERIENCES TO ENROLLED CHILDREN. ONE-ON-ONE WORK WITH SKILLED MENTORS SUCH AS THOSE OF EXPERIENCE CORPS, ASSISTED STUDENTS IN MEETING OR EXCEEDING THEIR READING LEVELS.EARLY LEARNING CENTERTHE EARLY LEARNING CENTER (ELC) RAN AT CAPACITY, ACCOMMODATING 42 STUDENT SLOTS FOR THE ENTIRE YEAR. IN RESPONSE TO COMMUNITY DEMAND AND PURSUANT TO QUALITY INITIATIVES, A NEW POSITION WAS CREATED, COMMUNITY SUPPORT NAVIGATOR WHICH HELPED FAMILIES CONNECT TO NEEDED RESOURCES AND SERVICES. DURING 2019, 10 GRADUATING PRE-K STUDENTS ENTERED KINDERGARTEN WITH 50% OF THEM AT 1ST GRADE READING LEVEL.PREPARING EACH EDUCATIONAL STAFF MEMBER WITH TRAININGS TO SUPPORT THEIR CAREER DEVELOPMENT WAS A PRIORITY IN 2019. IN ADDITION, WE PRIORITIZE HIRING TEACHERS FROM THE COMMUNITY WE SERVE, AND NURTURING THEIR TALENTS AS IS A PART OF OUR MISSION. TEACHER RETENTION CONTINUES TO BE A FOCUS OF ELC EFFORTS DURING THE YEAR, RESULTING IN CLASSROOM STABILITY AND OTHER STUDENT BENEFITS.
MULTISERVICE CENTERA NEW SLATE OF SIGNATURE EVENTS JOINED AN EVER EXPANDING PARTNERS NETWORK TO RESULT IN ANOTHER YEAR OF INCREASED IMPACT AND VISITORSHIP. IN ADDITION TO NEW VISITATION RECORDS, A GREATER NUMBER OF SIGNATURE EVENTS REACHED NEW AUDIENCES. JOINT PUBLIC EVENTS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH SAINT PAUL PARKS & RECREATION CELEBRATE IMPROVED SERVICE DELIVERY RESULTING FROM STRONG RELATIONSHIPS. SENIOR PROGRAMMING SENIORS PROGRAMMING FOCUSED IN ON EXPANDING OFFERINGS FOR MEMBERS OF OUR MAGNIFICENT GOLDEN AGERS, RETIRED MEN'S CLUB AND ACTIVE SENIORS PROGRAM, TO PROVIDE GREATER OPPORTUNITIES FOR ENGAGEMENT. PARTNERSHIP WITH AGENCIES SUCH AS RAMSEY COUNTY AND THE ST PAUL POLICE AND FIRE AS WELL AS AARP ALLOWED SENIORS TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF ENHANCED TECH TRAINING OFFERINGS, HEALTH AND SAFETY ACTIVITIES AND GARNER INFORMATION ON KEY TOPICS OF INTEREST. ARCHIVE PROJECTTHE HQB COMMUNITY ARCHIVE CONTINUED TO EXPAND IN 2019. CORPORATE AND PRIVATE FUNDERS HELPED UNDERWRITE CATALOGING AND DOCUMENTATION EFFORTS FOR A WIDENING CIRCLE OF STORIES FROM THE COMMUNITY RONDO RESIDENTS AND DESCENDANTS CAME IN TO SHARE THEIR FAMILY STORIES AND KNOWLEDGE SO THAT THEY COULD BE CAPTURED FOR POSTERITY.THE ARCHIVE ATTRACTED INCREASED PARTICIPATION FROM HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL INSTITUTIONS, SUCH AS THE UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA, MACALESTER COLLEGE, THE MN HISTORICAL SOCIETY, THE M MUSEUM AND NUMEROUS AUTHORS, EDUCATORS AND TECHNICAL EXPERTS.
