STATE SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING FAIR More than 500 middle and high school students from across Minnesota qualified to compete in this March 26-28 event, out of more than 3,000 competing in eight regional fairs. On March 13, due to COVID-19, MAS announced the fair would be held virtually. Students submitted videos of their projects that were reviewed online by STEM professionals serving as judges. To encourage participation at a time of financial uncertainty for many families, MAS reduced the registration fee and gave scholarships to all students in need. Only 20 projects scheduled to be presented at the in-person event were not presented virtually and 87 of the students originally registered participated. On April 1, MAS announced major award winners in a virtual awards ceremony attended by more than 350 people. Immediately following, MAS launched our website awards page, complete with student videos and positive judge comments. Responses to the virtual format were overwhelmingly positive.

SCIENCE QUIZ BOWLS MAS held two regional science bowls, one for high school students on January 25 and one for middle school students on February 8. Each was hosted by a college in St. Paul. At the high school event, 175 students representing 21 schools participated and 95 students from 12 schools competed in the middle school event. Professionals from a number of MN STEM companies and educational institutions -- 58 at the HS event and 43 at the MS competition -- staffed the event as volunteers. Our regional championship teams from Wayzata, MN, made it through the preliminary rounds into the final 32 teams at the National Science Bowl, held virtually due to COVID-19. In surveys, 89 of high school students said Science Bowl enhanced their interest in science and math and 88 of middle school students rated their overall experience with Science Bowl positively.

JUNIOR SCIENCE AND HUMANITIES SYMPOSIUM This STEM research paper competition for high school students from MN and the Dakotas, scheduled for March 16, was held virtually due to COVID-19. Students submitted slideshows and audio recordings of their presentations for STEM professionals serving as judges to review online. Most 83 of the students scheduled to present did so virtually. Results were announced online April 1 via a live webinar and an awards webpage. Two of our regional finalists went on to win at the national level, one winning first place and a 12,000 scholarship.
