THE MINNESOTA DEFENSE LAWYERS ASSOCIATION PROVIDES EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES THAT BENEFIT THE MEMBER AND CIVIL DEFENSE PRACTICE. THERE ARE TWELVE COMMITTEES THAT MEMBERS CAN JOIN THAT PROVIDE A VARIETY OF ACTIVITIES INCLUDING PROVIDING CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE MAGAZINE AND SPEAKERS FOR THE SEMINARS AND CONFERENCES. THE ORGANIZATION, THROUGH ITS SEMINARS, CONFERENCES, LUNCHES, DINNERS, MAGAZINE, E-NEWSLETTER AND OTHER ACTIVITIES, SERVES AS A VEHICLE FOR THE EXCHANGE OF INFORMATION ON COURT DECISIONS, BRIEFS, WITNESSES, TRENDS, PROCEDURES AND EXPERT WITNESSES AS WELL AS THE OPPORTUNITY TO OBTAIN CONTINUING LEGAL EDUCATION AND OPPORTUNITIES TO NETWORK WITH OTHERS IN THE LEGAL COMMUNITY.
THE ORGANIZATION SPONSORED SEMINARS, CONFERENCES AND OTHER EVENTS FOR ITS MEMBERS TO FURTHER THE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OF ITS MEMBERS. THESE EVENTS INCLUDED THE ANNUAL TRIAL TECHNIQUES SEMINAR, THE ANNUAL MEDICAL MALPRACTICE SEMINAR, MID-WINTER CONFERENCES HELD IN VARIOUS LOCATIONS THROUGH OUT THE STATE, LUNCHEON PROGRAMS AND DINNER PROGRAMS.
THE ORGANIZATION PUBLISHED A QUARTERLY MAGAZINE, MINNESOTA DEFENSE, WHICH FEATURES SUBSTANTIVE LAW ARTICLES WRITTEN BY THE ORGANIZATION'S MEMBERS. THESE ARTICLES SERVE TO EDUCATE AND INFORM THE MEMBERS ON COURT DECISIONS, BRIEFS, TRENDS AND PROCEDURES THROUGH OUT THE STATE AND OTHER MATTERS CONCERNING LEGISLATION, COURT PROCEDURE AND PRACTICE FROM A DEFENSE VIEWPOINT.
THE MDLA SPONSORS AND HOLDS AN INTENSIVE 2-1/2 DAY TRIAL PRACTICE TRAINING FOR NEW TO MID-LEVEL LAWYERS. THE TRAINING INVOLVES ACTUAL PRESENTATIONS BEFORE SENIOR LITIGATORS AND JUDGES ON ALL ASPECTS OF TRIAL PREPARATION AND PRESENTATION INCLUDING, VOIR DIRE, OPENING STATEMENTS, WITNESS EXAMINATIONS, EXPERT EXAMINATIONS, CLOSING ARGUMENTS, MOTIONS IN LIMINE, AND POST TRIAL MOTIONS. THE TRAINING IS DESIGNED TO PROVIDE THE ATTENDEES WITH CONSTRUCTIVE FEEDBACK AND THEREFORE, THE TRAINING IS USUALLY LIMITED TO LESS THAN 30 ATTENDEES.
