TO TRANSFORM THE LIVES AND SOCIETY BY BROADENING ACCESS TO THE POWER OF DR. MARIA MONTESSORI'S PROVEN METHOD OF EDUCATION
18 STUDENTS COMPLETED THE PRIMARY COURSE (TEACHER TRAINING FOR WORKING WITH CHILDREN AGES 3-6 YEARS) IN MAY 2019, ONE OF WHOM WAS A RECIPIENT OF TWIN CITIES UNITED WAY WOMEN UNITED SCHOLARSHIP FUNDS AWARDED TO LOW-INCOME WOMEN OF COLOR. THERE CONTINUES TO BE A GROWING NEED HERE IN THE UNITED STATES AND ABROAD FOR TRAINED TEACHERS, IN PARTICULAR THOSE FROM DIVERSE COMMUNITIES. 100% OF THE GRADUATES OBTAINED EMPLOYMENT, AND ONE GRADUATE FOUNDED A BILINGUAL MONTESSORI SCHOOL IN MINNEAPOLIS THAT OPENED FALL 2018. 21 STUDENTS ENROLLED IN THE THREE YEAR SUMMER ELEMENTARY COURSE (TEACHER TRAINING FOR WORKING WITH CHILDREN AGES 6-12 YEARS) BEGINNING IN JULY OF 2019. EACH YEAR, THE CENTER OFFERS WORKSHOPS TO ASSIST MONTESSORI PRACTITIONERS, PARENTS AND OTHER MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY IN CREATING DEVELOPMENTAL ENVIRONMENT FOR CHILDREN. AND FAMILIES. THIS YEAR, WE OFFERED FOUR WORKSHOPS ON TOPICS INCLUDING HOW TO BRING MONTESSORI PRINCIPLES HOME AND SUPPORTING CHILDREN WITH DYSLEXIA. OVER 118 INDIVIDUALS, INCLUDING PARENTS, ADMINISTRATORS, AND MONTESSORI PRACTITIONERS, ATTENDED THE WORKSHOPS. CORNERSTONE MONTESSORI SCHOOL (WHICH AIMS TO HELP CHILDREN OF ALL ECONOMIC AND ETHNIC BACKGROUNDS BENEFIT FROM A MONTESSORI CLASSROOM) COMPLETED ITS NINTH YEAR OF OPERATION WITH AN ENROLLMENT OF APPROXIMATELY 50 CHILDREN AGES 16 MONTHS-6 YEARS. A PUBLIC K-6 CHARTER SCHOOL, CORNERSTONE MONTESSORI ELEMENTARY SCHOOL WITH AN ENROLLMENT OF APPROXIMATELY 140 STUDENTS, IS ALSO HOUSED ON OUR CAMPUS. THE INTERNATIONAL MONTESSORI MUSEUM, WHICH HAS TRAVELED ALL OVER THE WORLD AND IS PERMANENTLY HOUSED AT THE CENTER, SHOWCASES 100 YEARS OF THE MONTESSORI METHOD. THE CENTER'S OUTREACH PROGRAMS CONTINUE TO THRIVE THROUGH SUPPORT OF MENTORSHIP AT PARTNER SCHOOLS AND PROGRAM EVALUATION INCLUDING ASSESSMENT OF CHILDREN'S ACADEMIC, COGNITIVE, AND SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT. THE CENTER CONTINUES ITS COLLABORATIVE PARTNERSHIP WITH ST. CATHERINE UNIVERSITY TO EXPAND MONTESSORI EDUCATION AND PARENT INVOLVEMENT IN THE EDUCATION OF CHILDREN, AS WELL AS A STATE TEACHING LICENSURE OPTION. THE CENTER PROVIDES A MENTORSHIP PROGRAM TO SUPPORT NEW MONTESSORI TEACHERS AND TRAINEES BY PAIRING THEM WITH EXPERIENCED TEACHERS IN THE FIELD. THIS HAS PROVEN TO BE A VALUABLE RESOURCE FOR STUDENTS IN TRAINING AS WELL AS NEW TEACHERS.
