PENUMBRA THEATRE COMPANY CREATES PROFESSIONAL PRODUCTIONS THAT ARE ARTISTICALLY EXCELLENT, THOUGHT PROVOKING, RELEVANT AND THAT ILLUMINATE THE HUMAN CONDITION THROUGH THE PRISM OF THE AFRICAN AMERICAN EXPERIENCE. PENUMBRA THEATRE CREATES PROFESSIONAL PRODUCTIONS THAT ARE ARTISTICALLY EXCELLENT, THOUGHT PROVOKING, AND RELEVANT WHICH ILLUMINATES THE HUMAN CONDITION THROUGH THE PRISM OF THE AFRICAN AMERICAN EXPERIENCE. PENUMBRA'S GOALS ARE AS FOLLOWS:* INCREASE PUBLIC AWARENESS OF THE SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTIONS OF AFRICAN AMERICANS IN CREATING A DIVERSIFIED AMERICAN THEATRICAL TRADITION.* ENCOURAGE AND FACILITATE A CULTURALLY DIVERSE AND ALL-INCLUSIVE AMERICA BY USING THEATRE TO TEACH, CRITICIZE, COMMENT, AND MODEL.* USE THEATRE TO CREATE AN AMERICAN MYTHOLOGY THAT INCLUDES AFRICAN AMERICANS AND OTHER PEOPLES OF COLOR IN EVERY THREAD OF THE FABRIC OF OUR SOCIETY.* CONTINUE TO MAINTAIN AND STABILIZE A BLACK PERFORMING ARTS COMMUNITY.
PENUMBRA PRODUCED 3 PLAYS DURING THE 2019-20 SEASON: PIPELINE, BLACK NATIVITY, AND THE WHITE CARD. PENUMBRA'S 4TH PLAY WAS CANCELLED DUE TO COVID-19 CLOSURES. IN FALL 2019, PENUMBRA LAUNCHED ITS INAUGURAL TWO-YEAR INTERDISCIPLINARY ARTIST RESIDENCY, THE ASHE LAB.
PENUMBRA OFFERED ITS ANNUAL EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS, INCLUDING ITS SUMMER INSTITUTE LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM FOR TEENS, LET'S TALK PANEL CONVERSATIONS, REEL TALK FREE FILM SCREENINGS, BOOKEND CLASSES FOR ADULT LEARNERS, AND EQUITY TRAINING WORKSHOPS. ALL SPRING 2020 EDUCATIONAL PROGAMS WERE CANCELLED DUE TO COVID-19 RELATED CLOSURES.
