SCHUBERT CLUB CULTIVATES A PASSION FOR MUSIC AND FOSTERS AN ENGAGED COMMUNITY OF MUSIC ENTHUSIASTS THROUGH CONCERTS, MUSIC EDUCATION, MUSEUM EXHIBITS, AND STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS.
CONCERTSIN 2019-2020 SCHUBERT CLUB PLANNED TO PRESENT SIX CONCERT SERIES THAT INCLUDED MORE THAN 60 RECITALS AND MUSICAL EVENTS AT VARIOUS VENUES THROUGHOUT THE TWIN CITIES. DUE TO THE ONSET OF RESTRICTIONS RELATED TO THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC, OUR SEASON OF LIVE PRESENTATIONS AND ACTIVITIES WAS INTERRUPTED IN MID-MARCH 2020. IN THIS ABBREVIATED SEASON, WE REACHED 20,000 AUDIENCE MEMBERS AND PARTICIPANTS BOTH IN PERSON AND ONLINE. THOUSANDS MORE HEARD PERFORMANCES BROADCAST ON MINNESOTA PUBLIC RADIO REGIONALLY AND ACROSS THE NATION.SCHUBERT CLUB'S CONCERT OFFERINGS INCLUDE OUR INTERNATIONAL ARTIST SERIES (IAS). IT IS ONE OF ONLY A FEW RECITAL-FORMAT SERIES IN THE UNITED STATES, AND IS KEY TO THE ORGANIZATION'S NATIONAL AND WORLDWIDE REPUTATION FOR ENGAGING THE WORLD'S GREATEST ARTISTS IN SOLO PERFORMANCES. THIS SERIES WAS LAUNCHED IN 1893, AND CONTINUES TODAY AT THE ORDWAY CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS IN SAINT PAUL. IN 2019-2020 THE FOUR IAS CONCERTS THROUGH MARCH 2020 ATTRACTED NEARLY 5,500 AUDIENCE MEMBERS. MUSIC IN THE PARK SERIES IS ONE OF THE FEW DEDICATED CHAMBER MUSIC SERIES IN MINNESOTA, AND IT FEATURES ENSEMBLES OF NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL PROMINENCE. THROUGH MID-MARCH 2020, MUSIC IN THE PARK SERIES PRESENTED CHAMBER MUSIC ENSEMBLES AT SAINT ANTHONY PARK UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST IN THREE CONCERTS TO 1,000 PEOPLE. IN ADDITION, SCHUBERT CLUB PRESENTED ONE FAMILY CONCERT SERVING 75 CHILDREN AND ADULTS IN SAINT ANTHONY PARK AND A SENSORY-FRIENDLY CONCERT AT THE HALLIE Q. BROWN COMMUNITY CENTER FOR APPROXIMATELY 50 YOUNG PEOPLE ON THE AUTISM SPECTRUM AND THEIR FAMILIES TO EXPERIENCE LIVE PROFESSIONAL MUSIC IN A SAFE AND SUPPORTIVE ENVIRONMENT.SCHUBERT CLUB MIX IS AN INNOVATIVE SERIES DESIGNED TO TAKE THE FORMALITY OUT OF CLASSICAL MUSIC. AUDIENCES ARE TREATED TO REMARKABLE AND INTIMATE PERFORMANCES IN NON-TRADITIONAL VENUES FEATURING AN ECLECTIC RANGE OF ARTISTS WHO ARE CURRENTLY INFLUENCING THE MUSICAL LANDSCAPE. THREE SCHUBERT CLUB MIX CONCERTS AT ARIA AND THE AMERICAN SWEDISH INSTITUTE IN MINNEAPOLIS AND AT THE JAMES J. HILL CENTER IN ST PAUL, REACHED A TOTAL AUDIENCE OF APPROXIMATELY 800 PEOPLE. 130 MINNESOTA-BASED MUSICIANS AND COMPOSERS WERE AMONG THOSE FEATURED DURING THE 17 FREE, NOONTIME COURTROOM CONCERTS AT LANDMARK CENTER FROM OCTOBER THROUGH MID-MARCH. COURTROOM CONCERT AUDIENCES AVERAGE 135 PEOPLE EACH WEEK, ATTENDED BY DOWNTOWN WORKERS AND VISITORS AS WELL AS MUSIC ENTHUSIASTS WITH DISABILITIES AND SENIORS, WHO OTHERWISE WOULD FIND IT DIFFICULT TO ATTEND A CONCERT SERIES.ACCORDO IS A HIGHLY REGARDED STRING ENSEMBLE COMPOSED OF PRESENT AND FORMER PRINCIPALS OF THE SAINT PAUL CHAMBER AND MINNESOTA ORCHESTRAS. SCHUBERT CLUB PRESENTED FIVE CONCERTS BY ACCORDO AT THREE VENUES IN MINNEAPOLIS AND SAINT PAUL FOR NEARLY 1,400 AUDIENCE MEMBERS.SCHUBERT CLUB ALSO CO-SPONSORED A CONCERT SERIES BY THE LOCAL ENSEMBLE HILL HOUSE CHAMBER PLAYERS AT THE HISTORIC JAMES J. HILL HOUSE IN ST. PAUL FOR 250 AUDIENCE MEMBERS.
MUSIC EDUCATION AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENTSCHUBERT CLUB BELIEVES THAT MUSIC EDUCATION AND ARTS ACCESS ARE ESSENTIAL COMPONENTS OF LIVING IN A CULTURALLY RICH AND HEALTHY COMMUNITY. PROJECT CHEER, IN ITS 51ST YEAR, OFFERED FREE PIANO AND GUITAR LESSONS FOR APPROXIMATELY 120 STUDENTS IN GRADES 3-12 AT THE HALLIE Q. BROWN/MARTIN LUTHER KING COMMUNITY CENTER AND AT THE EAST SIDE BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB IN SAINT PAUL.IN ITS 7TH YEAR, KIDSJAM IS AN INTERACTIVE PROGRAM FOR KIDS AGES 5-12 TO PLAY, LISTEN, LEARN AND CREATE WITH MUSIC. 18 WORKSHOPS WERE HELD AT TWO COMMUNITY CENTERS AND TWO ST PAUL PUBLIC SCHOOLS, AS WELL AS IN THE SCHUBERT CLUB MUSEUM. KIDSJAM WORKSHOPS ARE LED BY A DIVERSE ARRAY OF MUSICIANS AND TEACHING ARTISTS. CHILDREN AND THEIR CHAPERONES EXPERIENCED LIVE MUSIC AND CREATIVE ACTIVITIES, AND LEARNED ABOUT THE PEOPLE, CULTURES AND SOUNDS BEHIND THE MUSIC.THEOROI IS SCHUBERT CLUB'S MEMBERSHIP PROGRAM FOR YOUNG ADULTS AGES 21-39 WHO ATTEND LOCAL CULTURAL PERFORMANCES DURING THE SEASON AND ARE COMMITTED TO SPREADING THE WORD ABOUT THESE EXPERIENCES THROUGH INTERACTIVE SOCIAL MEDIA OUTLETS. DURING THE SHORTENED 2019-20 SEASON, THEOROI ATTENDED SIX OF THE PLANNED MONTHLY PERFORMANCES AND EVENTS.SCHUBERT CLUB PRODUCED A SECOND YEAR OF MUSIC LISTENING CIRCLE, A GROUP THAT MET BOTH IN-PERSON AND ONLINE WITH AN EXPERT TO LEARN ABOUT AND ENJOY A CURATED SELECTION OF CLASSICAL MUSIC TOGETHER. OTHER EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES IN 2019-2020 INCLUDED ENSEMBLE PERFORMANCES IN SCHOOLS AND RESIDENTIAL NURSING HOMES, "FIVE-DOLLAR SCHOLAR" STUDENT TICKETS FOR SELECTED CONCERTS, AND PRE- AND POST-CONCERT TALKS. SCHUBERT CLUB'S VARIOUS EDUCATION AND COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT PROGRAMS PROVIDED LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES FOR 2000 PARTICIPANTS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. COMPOSER-IN-RESIDENCESCHUBERT CLUB'S COMPOSER-IN-RESIDENCE, DEVON RUSSELL GRAY, COMPLETED YEAR ONE OF A TWO-YEAR RESIDENCY. HIS ACTIVITIES INCLUDED WRITING A NEW PIECE FOR ACCORDO WHICH WAS PREMIERED IN FEBRUARY 2020, AND VARIOUS TEACHING ASSIGNMENTS INCLUDING JAZZ PIANO COACHING AND YOUNG COMPOSER MENTORSHIP.FEATURED ARTISTSTHE 2019-2020 SEASON WAS SCHUBERT CLUB'S SECOND YEAR OF INVITING A SPECIAL FEATURED ARTIST OR FEATURED ENSEMBLE, TO PERFORM CONCERTS AND LEAD COMMUNITY-BASED EVENTS DURING THE SEASON. THE DANISH STRING QUARTET WERE OUR FEATURED ARTISTS IN 2019-20. THEIR FIRST VISIT TO THE TWIN CITIES INCLUDED A SOLD-OUT PERFORMANCE AT THE AMERICAN SWEDISH INSTITUTE IN OCTOBER 2019. THEIR SECOND APPEARANCE WHICH WAS TO TAKE PLACE IN MAY 2020, A SEVEN-CONCERT RESIDENCY FEATURING ALL 16 BEETHOVEN STRING QUARTETS AND A VARIETY OF COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT ACTIVITIES, HAS BEEN POSTPONED.STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPSTHE IN-PERSON BRUCE P. CARLSON SCHOLARSHIP COMPETITION SCHEDULED FOR LATE MARCH 2020 HAD TO BE CANCELLED DUE TO THE PANDEMIC. INSTEAD, SCHUBERT CLUB HELD AN ONLINE COMPETITION FOR PIANISTS AND GUITARISTS WHO SUBMITTED VIDEO RECORDINGS OF THEIR RECENT PERFORMANCES FOR REVIEW BY NATIONALLY ACCLAIMED JUDGES. TWELVE SCHOLARSHIPS WITH A TOTAL VALUE OF $21,000 WERE AWARDED TO COMPETITION ENTRANTS IN FIVE CATEGORIES. ADDITIONALLY, SCHUBERT CLUB AWARDED SPECIAL MUSIC GRANTS OF $2,700 TO STUDENTS SUPPORTING NEEDS-BASED SCHOLARSHIPS TO YOUTH WHO WERE SELECTED BY THEIR TEACHERS, AS WELL AS INSTRUMENT PURCHASES FOR STUDENT USE.A DAY-LONG JAZZ PIANO WORKSHOP, WHICH INCLUDED AWARDS OF $900 IN JAZZ MUSIC SCHOLARSHIPS, WAS PRESENTED IN FEBRUARY 2020.
MUSEUM EXHIBITSOPEN THREE DAYS A WEEK (AND BY PRIOR RESERVATION) AND WELCOMING APPROXIMATELY 7500 VISITORS IN A NORMAL YEAR, THE SCHUBERT CLUB MUSIC MUSEUM INCLUDES AN EXTENSIVE COLLECTION OF RARE AND HISTORIC KEYBOARDS AND OTHER MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS, AND DISPLAYS ORIGINAL COMPOSER LETTERS SELECTED FROM THE GILMAN ORDWAY MANUSCRIPT COLLECTION. DESIGNED TO ACCOMMODATE SMALL TO MEDIUM SIZE GROUP TOURS, THE MUSEUM GALLERIES ARE LOCATED ON THE SECOND FLOOR OF LANDMARK CENTER. ADMISSION IS FREE. IN MARCH 2020, THE MUSEUM CLOSED IN ORDER TO UNDERGO A RENOVATION AND COMPLETE REDESIGN OF ITS EXHIBITS. THE RE-OPENING OF THE MUSEUM IS ANTICIPATED TO BE IN FALL 2020.
