Organizations Filed Purposes: TEATRO DEL PUEBLO PROMOTES LATINX CULTURE THROUGH THE CREATION AND PRESENTATION OF PERFORMING ARTS BY: DEVELOPING AND SUPPORTING LATINX ARTISTS; PROVIDING EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR ALL PEOPLE TO EXPERIENCE LATINX CULTURE; AND PROMOTING CROSS-CULTURAL DIALOGUE.

OUR MISSION IS TO GIVE VOICE TO THE LATINX COMMUNITY THROUGH THE CREATION AND PRESENTATION OF PERFORMING ARTS. WE SUPPORT LATIN AMERICAN WORK AND ARTISTS WHILE PROVIDING EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR ALL TO EXPERIENCE LATINX CULTURE AND ENGAGE IN CROSS-CULTURAL DIALOGUE. FOUNDED IN 1992 ON THE WEST SIDE IN THE HEART OF SAINT PAUL'S LATIN AMERICAN NEIGHBORHOOD, OUR WORK ENSURES UNDER-REPRESENTED LATINX ARTISTS HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO PERFORM, EARN INCOME, AND BUILD THEIR ARTISTIC PROFILE. WE STARTED OUR SEASON IN JUNE WITH AN EDUCATIONAL TOUR OF "ADVENTURES OF JUAN", WRITTEN BY ELLE THONI AND ANNA KUNIN. THIS PUPPET SHOW IS ABOUT A YOUNG LATINX BOY WHO EMBARKS ON A JOURNEY TO SAVE HIS GARDEN WITH MYTHICAL CHARACTERS FROM NORTH AND CENTRAL AMERICA, AND LEARNS MORE APPRECIATION FOR HIS CULTURE ALONG THE WAY. WE PERFORMED THE SHOW AT LOCATIONS SUCH AS ST. ANTHONY PARK ARTS FESTIVAL, EAGAN ARTS FESTIVAL, COLUMBIA FESTIVAL, AND THE POWDERHORN ART FAIR. IN FEBRUARY WE PRESENTED, "FROM PUERTO RICO...WITH LOVE?" A TWO SHOW PRESENTATION FEATURING "BROKEN ENGLISH, MOTHER TONGUE" BY JAVIER MORILLO AND "RESABIOS DE AMARGURA OR THAT BITTER CABARET" BY BELIZA TORRES NARVEZ. IN MARCH, WHEN ORGANIZATIONS BEGAN TO CLOSE IN RESPONSE TO COVID-19, WE WERE PLANNING THE FINAL TWO SHOWS OF OUR THREE-SHOW SEASON. THE THEATRE MOVEMENT GROUP WE WERE HOSTING APRIL 17 AND 18, "LOS AUDACES" FROM AREQUIPA, PERU WAS ALL SET TO FLY TO US, AND WE WERE GEARING UP FOR AUDITIONS FOR OUR JUNE PRODUCTION OF "ROMEO AND JULIET: LOVE IN THE TIME OF HATE." A MAY RESIDENCY WITH CENTRO TYRONE GUZMAN WAS ALSO CANCELED. INSTEAD, THE FIRST THING WE DID WAS TO CALL ARTISTS TO GET AN IDEA OF HOW THEY WERE FARING IN THIS CRISIS. WE DISCOVERED THAT MOST HAD LOST ALL OF THEIR EMPLOYMENT FOR THE FORESEEABLE FUTURE AND WERE DEPENDENT ON UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE CHECKS. MOST OF THE ARTISTS WEREN'T OPTIMISTIC ABOUT THEIR PROSPECTS OF LIVING OFF THEIR ART, WITH THE UNCERTAINTY OF THE PANDEMIC. THESE CONVERSATIONS LED US TO RETHINK THE CONTENT AND IMPACT OF OUR FUTURE PROGRAMS TO BETTER REACH OUR COMMUNITY DURING THIS CRISIS. IN RESPONSE, WE CREATED AN ARTIST EMPOWERMENT SERIES, WHERE WE FOCUSED ON TOPICS OUR ARTISTS WANTED TO LEARN ABOUT, SUCH AS HOW TO TEACH IN A DIGITAL ENVIRONMENT.
