Organizations Filed Purposes: OUR MISSION IS CREATING OPPORTUNITIES FOR PEOPLE WITH SPECIAL NEEDS. INDEPENDENCE CENTER WORKS WITH ADULTS WITH COGNITIVE AND INTELLECTUAL DISABILITIES. THE PURPOSE OF THE AGENCY IS TO PROVIDE SUPERVISION, SUPPORT, RECREATION, AND EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES THAT PROMOTE INDEPENDENCE IN AN ENVIRONMENT THAT IS PERSON-CENTERED. GOALS AND OBJECTIVES ARE IDENTIFIED THAT CONSIDER WHAT IS IMPRTANT TO THE PERSON AND WHAT IS IMPORTANT FOR THE PERSON TO LIVE A MEANINGFUL LIFE.

CREATING OPPORTUNITIES FOR PEOPLE WITH SPECIAL NEEDS. THE CHARITABLE PURPOSES FOCUSES ON PROVIDING RECREATION, LEISURE, EMPLOYMENT, SUPERVISION AND SUPPORT FOR ADULTS WITH COGNITIVE AND INTELLECTUAL DISABILITIES.

DAY TRAINING AND HABILITATION (DT&H) SERVICES ARE LICENSED BY THE STATE OF MN, DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN SERVICES AND ARE OFFERED TO INDIVIDUALS WITH DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES AND RELATED CONDITIONS. SERVICES FOCUS ON ENABLING AN INDIVIDUAL TO ATTAIN OR MAINTAIN HIS/HER MAXIMUM FUNCTIONAL LEVEL AND ARE COORDINATED WITH OTHER CARE PROVIDERS INVOLVED IN THE SUPPORT NEEDED SPECIFIC TO EACH INDIVIDUAL. DT&H SERVICES REINFORCE SKILLS OR LESSONS TAUGHT IN SCHOOL, THERAPY, OR OTHER SETTINGS AND INTRODUCE NEW SKILL SETS THAT ARE OF INTEREST AND/OR NECESSARY FOR THE PERSON TO FULLY PARTICIPATE IN COMMUNITY LIFE. INDIVIDUAL ABILITIES ARE ASSESSED UPON ADMISSION AND AT LEAST ANNUALLY THEREAFTER BUT MORE OFTEN IF NECESSARY. TRAINING AND SUPERVISION ARE PROVIDED IN THE MAIN FACILITY AS WELL AS IN COMMUNITY SETTINGS. SERVICES MAY INCLUDE INSTRUCTION WITH SELF-CARE, LEARNING TO MANAGE THEIR OWN BEHAVIOR, LEARNING TO DINE INDEPENDENTLY, BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS, RECREATION AND LEISURE OPPORTUNITIES, COMMUNITY SURVIVAL SKILLS, STREET SAFETY, LEARNING TO USE ADAPTIVE EQUIPMENT AND ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY, AND MONEY MANAGEMENT. IN 2018, INDEPENDENCE CENTER, INC. PROVIDED SERVICES TO 45 INDIVIDUALS. THE VAST MAJORITY OF PARTICIPANTS EXPRESSED INTEREST IN ACTIVITIES AND EVENTS IN THE COMMUNITY. IN 2018, ICI FACILITATED 745 OUTINGS INTO THE COMMUNITY THAT INCLUDED VISITS TO LOCAL BUSINESSES, AREA PARKS, RECREATIONAL SITES, AND COMMUNITY EVENTS. ICI ALSO FACILITATED PARTICIPATION WITH VOLUNTEERING WITH THE KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS TOOTSIE ROLL DRIVE.

EMPLOYMENT SUPPORTS ARE OFFERED BOTH IN-HOUSE AND IN BUSINESSES IN THE COMMUNITY. SERVICES FOCUS ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF SKILLS ASSOCIATED WITH OBTAINING AND MAINTAINING EMPLOYMENT. FOR THOSE INDIVIDUALS WHO REQUIRE MORE INTENSIVE SUPPORT, PRE-VOCATIONAL TRAINING IS OFFERED. PRE-VOCATIONAL SUPPORT FOCUSES ON PREPARING AN INDIVIDUAL FOR EMPLOYMENT AND EMPHASIZES CONCEPTS SUCH AS COMPLIANCE, ENDURANCE, ATTENTION SPAN, AND SOCIALLY APPROPRIATE WORKPLACE BEHAVIOR. INSTRUCTION ACCENTUATES THE UNDERLYING SOFT SKILLS WITH EMPLOYMENT MORE SO THAN TEACHING SPECIFIC JOB SKILLS. FOR MORE INDEPENDENT INDIVIDUALS, TRAINING FOCUSES ON LEARNING SPECIFIC JOB SKILLS, AND ENHANCING SKILLS AND EXPERTISE FOR PARTICULAR JOBS. AS MORE EXPERIENCE AND INDEPENDENCE ARE ACCOMPLISHED, EARNING POTENTIAL INCREASES. IN 2018, 18 INDIVIDUALS WORKED 855 HOURS FOR FIVE DIFFERENT BUSINESSES. 27 INDIVIDUALS ACTIVELY PARTICIPATED IN ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES RATHER THAN EMPLOYMENT SERVICES.
