Organizations Filed Purposes:
The mission of the Waseca County Historical Society is to collect, preserve, interpret and disseminate the history of Waseca County and its citizens; and to create excitement and interest in that past.
WCHS ExhibitsWCHS has a permanent, growing collection of artifacts numbering over 40,000; and about 17,000 images scanned--all catalogued and archivally stored. Retrieving the collection's stories and information, and bringing them to the community with meaning and respect is certainly part of our mission. Everything is accessible via our searchable website. We have completed the process of bringing our collection of key artifacts representing the essential history of Waseca County in the form of a Timeline on our balcony level of the museum. The Timeline exhibit will be part of new programming and expanded hours for family visits to the museum. In addition to the permanent collection, we mount about two temporary exhibitions every year, and a holiday open house exhibit.
Chautauqua at Historic Maplewood Park is a very successful biannual community-wide event that has happened every first weekend in July (around the 4th) since 2003. The purpose is to recreate the historic Chautauqua movement that came to Waseca and so many other small towns across the Midwest in the late 19th century. Waseca County history states the Chautauqua Assemblies happened between 1883 and 1899 in our Waseca Parks. The WCHS Chautauqua is a one-day, family-friendly event with music, storytelling, presentations, magic and nature, our annual Chautauqua is a gift to the community and area visitors. It is funded with grants. In 2015 we moved Chautauqua to our in town Trowbridge Park.
WCHS Searchable WebsiteThe processing and indexing of artifacts, archives, newspapers, and so many other historical records is a constant and continuing activity. Making that information accessible online requires technological hardware, software and know-how. We are able to accomplish this accessibility with staff and outside consultants. We consider our Society to be among the more progressive in all these respects.
