The Severn Leadership Group (SLG) is designed to develop men and women into highly effective leaders who inspire lives of selfless courage and service to others. The SLG believes that leadership is defined by one's character and is based on a core set of timeless and transcendent virtues and honed through mentoring by leaders who "walk the talk". The SLG presents a holistic picture of both leadership and followership with an emphasis on practical knowledge and skills.
To develop and support an ever-increasing circle of leaders and followers.
The SLG leadership development program consists of three inter-related elements: Fellows Element - The SLG conducts a six to eight-month leadership development program for mid-career professionals with a focus on one's character and the need for a set of core virtues. The core virtues are love, integrity, truth, and excellence in the context of healthy relationships. The program develops leaders to live a life of selfless courage and service to others before self. Senior Fellows Element- The SLG selects proven, experienced leaders to be senior fellows. This program is designed to introduce new senior fellows to the SLG developmental process, along with an in-depth review of all program materials. It is a time for study, reflection, discussion, and practical application. Additionally, senior fellows are introduced to the role, responsibilities, and expectations of a mentor.Mentoring Element - The SLG conducts a mentoring program concurrent with the Fellows program. Each fellow has a mentor who is a proven and experienced leader. Mentors meet with their fellows at least monthly to serve as the face of the SLG, model its perspectives, and walk the talk. The mentor is a friend who is willing to listen, challenge, support the Fellow, and take an active interest in their development both personally and professionally.During fiscal year 2020, SLG offered its leadership development in three locations: Annapolis, MD; Northern Virginia; and Groton, CT. Annapolis-based senior fellows staffed many of the team responsibilities for Groton activities by traveling extensively to support the mission.
