To increase the reading level of second graders reading below grade level, to increase students' sense of self-esteem and self-confidence, and to provide a caring environment where reading is fun!
one on one reading & tutoring was provided for 102 at risk students, primarily second graders, in Anne Arundel County, MD two afternoons a week during the school year for a total of 6,826 hours by 250 volunteers Per the mandates of Anne Arundel County Public Schools and Governor Hogan, in-person STAIR programming was suspended in mid-March 2020. Covid-19 Continuity Programming for STAIR was designed responsively and responsibly in support of our mission to increase the reading level of 2nd graders reading below grade level. The STAIR At Home model is made up of three parts: INSTRUCTIONAL SUPPORT, BUILDING HOME LIBRARIES and FAMILY ENGAGEMENT. This parallels our in-person program, which has been successfully serving students in our communities for 15 years. STAIR students will continue to benefit from supplemental reading interventions, while our committed volunteers shift from one-on-one tutors to books club leaders, guest readers, pen pals research aides and tutorial coaches.
