THE BABE RUTH BIRTHPLACE FOUNDATION, INC. IS AN INDEPENDENT, NOT-FOR-PROFIT EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTION DEDICATED TO PERPETUATING THE HISTORIC LEGACY OF BABE RUTH, BALTIMORE'S ORIOLES AND COLTS, AND LOCAL AND REGIONAL SPORTS AT THE AMATEUR, COLLEGIATE AND PROFESSIONAL LEVELS, BY PRESERVING, EXHIBITING, INTERPRETING AND AUGMENTING ITS COLLECTION FOR A DIVERSE AUDIENCE.
THE BABE RUTH BIRTHPLACE FOUNDATION, INC. WAS FORMED IN 1973 TO ESTABLISH, MAINTAIN, AND PRESERVE THE HOME WHERE BABE RUTH WAS BORN. IN 1983, THE FOUNDATION BROADENED ITS MISSION TO INCLUDE THE BALTIMORE ORIOLES AND LOCAL BASEBALL, AND WAS DESIGNATED THE OFFICIAL BALTIMORE ORIOLES MUSEUM. THE MUSEUM HAS BECOME THE OFFICIAL ARCHIVES FOR THE BALTIMORE COLTS. THE MUSEUM ALSO REPRESENTS BALTIMORE'S RAVENS AND BLAST, MICHAEL PHELPS, AND EIGHT AREA UNIVERSITIES.THE BABE RUTH BIRTHPLACE AND MUSEUM IS A NATIONAL HISTORIC LANDMARK AND SPORTS MUSEUM ORIGINALLY ESTABLISHED TO PRESERVE AND MAINTAIN THE HISTORIC STRUCTURE THAT WAS THE BIRTHPLACE OF GEORGE HERMAN "BABE" RUTH, JR. THE MUSEUM ORIGINATES AND ADMINISTERS SPORTS-RELATED ACTIVITIES AND PROGRAMS THAT EDUCATE, INFORM, AND ENTERTAIN THE PUBLIC.
EDUCATION OF PUBLIC ABOUT CONTRIBUTIONS OF BABE RUTH AND CHRONICLE HISTORY OF BALTIMORE'S ORIOLES AND COLTS, THE NEGRO LEAGUES, AND AREA COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES. 22,908 PEOPLE ATTENDED THE MUSEUM, OF THOSE IN ATTENDANCE APPROXIMATELY 25 EDUCATIONAL TOURS CONSISTING OF SCHOOL-AGED CHILDREN WERE GIVEN. THESE CHILDREN LEARNED ABOUT BABE RUTH AND THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STAR SPANGLED BANNER IN SPORTS. IN ADDITION, THE MUSEUM MAINTAINS AN EXTENSIVE LIBRARY AND ARCHIVES THAT ARE UTILIZED BY DOZENS OF SCHOLARS, HISTORIANS, AND AUTHORS.
