Organizations Filed Purposes: TO COLLECT, PRESERVE, AND INTERPRET THE INDUSTRIAL AND TECHNOLOGICAL HERITAGE OF THE BALTIMORE REGION FOR THE PUBLIC BY PRESENTING EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS AND EXHIBITS THAT EXPLORE THE STORIES OF MARYLAND'S INDUSTRIES AND THE PEOPLE WHO CREATED AND WORKED IN THEM.

MUSEUM EXHIBITION - WE CELEBRATE PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE INNOVATIONS OF BALTIMORE INDUSTRY.

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING: IN FY2020, THE BMI OFFERED MORE THAN A DOZEN CURRICULUM-ALIGNED EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS FOR BOTH ON- AND OFF-SITE SCHOOL GROUPS. BEFORE THE COVID-19 EMERGENCY, THESE PROGRAMS PROVIDED 56,995 ON-SITE EDUCATIONAL SERVICES TO MORE THAN 19,300 STUDENTS, TEACHERS, AND CHAPERONES. IN RESPONSE TO THE PANDEMIC, THE BMI DEVELOPED TWO NEW REMOTE SCHOOL PROGRAMSCITY KITS ACTIVITY BOXES AND INDUSTRY INVESTIGATORS VIRTUAL TOURTHAT TOGETHER SAFELY SERVED MORE THAN 1,000 STUDENTS AND TEACHERS. THE BMI ALSO CONTINUED TO OFFER THE POPULAR MARYLAND ENGINEERING CHALLENGES. SHIFTED TO A VIRTUAL FORMAT, THESE HIGHLY ANTICIPATED STEM COMPETITIONS ENGAGED NEARLY 700 YOUNG ENGINEERS.

EXHIBITIONS & COLLECTIONS: EXHIBITIONS PLAY AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN FULFILLING THE BMI'S MISSION. DESPITE THE COVID-19 EMERGENCY, FY2020 WAS A BUSY YEAR FOR EXHIBITS. FROM JUNE 2019 TO MARCH 2020, THE BMI HOSTED "SHUTTERED: IMAGES FROM THE FALL OF BETHLEHEM STEEL," A TEMPORARY INDOOR EXHIBIT OF PHOTOGRAPHS TAKEN BY LOCAL PHOTOJOURNALIST J.M. GIORDANO. THE MUSEUM ALSO OPENED A NEW POP-UP EXHIBIT ON WOMEN'S WORK CLOTHES IN THE 20TH CENTURY AND HAS CONTINUED TO DIVERSIFY THE CONTENT OF ITS GALLERIES THROUGH THE "REFRAMING THE NARRATIVE" INITIATIVE. LASTLY, BMI STAFF BEGAN WORK ON A NEW OUTDOOR EXHIBIT FEATURING STORIES OF FEMALE WORKERS AT THE FORMER BETHLEHEM STEEL MILL. OPENED ALONG A STRETCH OF THE MUSEUM'S OUTDOOR FENCE IN OCTOBER 2020, "WOMEN OF STEEL" CAN BE VIEWED BY THE PUBLIC FREE-OF-CHARGE. THESE AND OTHER EXHIBITIONS DRAW HEAVILY UPON THE BMI'S ARCHIVAL COLLECTIONS, WHICH CONTAIN OVER 10,000 LINEAR FEET OF RECORDS FROM DOZENS OF MARYLAND BUSINESSES, AS WELL AS OVER 80,000 PHOTOGRAPHIC IMAGES AND A 5,000-VOLUME RESEARCH LIBRARY. ALTHOUGH MOST OF THESE COLLECTIONS ARE ONLY AVAILABLE ON-SITE, THE PANDEMIC HAS ACCELERATED EFFORTS TO DIGITIZE THE BMI'S RESOURCES AND MAKE THEM REMOTELY ACCESSIBLE.

PUBLIC PROGRAMMING: THE BMI'S PUBLIC PROGRAMS PROVIDE A WIDE RANGE OF ENGAGING ACTIVITIES FOR FAMILIES, CHILDREN, AND ADULTS. PRIOR TO THE COVID-19 EMERGENCY, OUR ON-SITE PUBLIC PROGRAMS BROUGHT NEARLY 2,600 VISITORS TO THE BMI AND INCLUDED PRESENTATIONS ON THE FORMER BETHLEHEM STEEL MILL; CURATORIAL WALKTHROUGHS OF NEW EXHIBITS; LOCAL BEER TASTINGS; AND THE BALTIMORE CHILDREN'S BUSINESS FAIR. BMI STAFF RESPONDED TO THE PANDEMIC BY DEVELOPING NEW REMOTE PROGRAMS INCLUDING ONLINE LECTURES, VIRTUAL TOURS, A DIGITAL BOOK CLUB, AND A VIRTUAL "ROAD TRIP" TO PARTNER MUSEUMS. THE BMI WAS ALSO ABLE TO OPEN ITS OUTDOORS SPACES FOR SOCIALLY DISTANCED PROGRAMS SUCH AS A WEEKLY FARMER'S MARKET AND WATERFRONT YOGA CLASSES.
