STORMWATER REDUCTION - BLUE WATER BALTIMORE'S STORMWATER REDUCTION EFFORTS AIM TO REDUCE THE VOLUME OF RAIN WATER RUNOFF, OR STORMWATER, FLOWING INTO STORM DRAINS AND STREAMS FROM INSTITUTIONAL PROPERTIES, AND IS AN OVERALL EFFORT TO REDUCE FLOODING IN STREAMS AND TO REDUCE NUTRIENT, SEDIMENT, AND OTHER POLLUTION FROM ENTERING LOCAL STREAMS AND ULTIMATELY THE CHESAPEAKE BAY.IN 2019, WE WORKED WITH MORE THAN 30 PARTNERS INCLUDING CONGREGATIONS, SCHOOLS, NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATIONS, AND HOSPITALS TO PLAN AND CONSTRUCT GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS THAT REDUCE AND FILTER STORMWATER RUNOFF FROM OVER 5 ACRES OF HARDSCAPE. WE MANAGED THE INSTALLATION OF 4 RAIN GARDENS, INSTALLED RAINWATER HARVESTING CISTERNS THAT CAPTURE OVER 4,000 GALLONS OF RUNOFF IN A STORM, AND WORKED WITH VOLUNTEERS TO PLANT OVER 5,000 SQUARE FEET OF CONSERVATION LANDSCAPING.
GREENING/ENVIRONMENTAL CONSTRUCTION - BLUE WATER BALTIMORE'S COMMUNITY FORESTRY PROGRAM PLANTED 1,121 TREES IN PARKS, SCHOOLS, FOR RESIDENTS AND ALONG NEIGHBORHOOD STREETS. IN ADDITION, BLUE WATER BALTIMORE MOTIVATED HOMEOWNERS TO PLANT AN ADDITIONAL 1,340 TREES IN THEIR YARDS THROUGH TREE GIVEAWAYS AND A YARD TREE INCENTIVE AND PLANTING PROGRAM. OUR STREET TREE PROGRAM ALSO REMOVED 2,600 SQUARE FEET OF CONCRETE BY CREATING AND EXPANDING TREE PITS.
NURSERY - BLUE WATER BALTIMORE'S HERRING RUN NURSERY GROWS PLANTS, TREES, AND SHRUBS NATIVE TO THE MID-ATLANTIC REGION. THESE PLANTS ARE USED IN RESTORATION PROJECTS AND TO SELL TO RESIDENTS OR WHOLESALE CUSTOMERS. SPECIALTIES OF OUR LANDSCAPING PROGRAM ALSO INCLUDE DESIGNING AND INSTALLING RAIN GARDENS AND LOW MAINTENANCE NATIVE LANDSCAPES TO REDUCE STORM RUNOFF. IN 2019, WE SOLD 28,276 NATIVE PLANTS WITH THE HELP OF OVER 300 NURSERY VOLUNTEERS.
