TO ORGANIZE AND EMPOWER LOW TO MODERATE INCOME MARYLANDERS TO ACHIEVE TRANSFORMATIVE CHANGE ON ISSUES OF JUSTICE. OUR GRASSROOTS ORGANIZING MODEL PRIORITIZES ENGAGEMENT AND LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT OF THOSE MOST IMPACTED BY POVERTY, RACISM, TRAUMA AND OTHER INJUSTICE.
LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT: RECRUITED AND ORGANIZED LOW-INCOME RESIDENTS. CU TRAINED AND MENTORED ITS MEMBERS AND LEADERS, INCLUDING SENDING DELEGATIONS OF UP TO FIVE MEMBERS TO NATIONAL MEETINGS AND TRAININGS. WE ORGANIZED LOW-INCOME TENANTS TO LEAD CHANGE, INCLUDING WINNING UNIVERSAL LICENSING AND INSPECTION OF RENTAL PROPERTIES IN BALTIMORE.TRAUMA, YOUTH VIOLENCE AND EDUCATION: WORKED IN COALITION IN WEST BALTIMORE TO BUILD COMMUNITY RESILIENCE OVER TRAUMA. HOSTED AT RENAISSANCE ACADEMY HIGH SCHOOL, WE LAUNCHED OUR YOUTH ORGANIZING LEADERSHIP ACADEMY (YOLA). WE EXPANDED OUR TRAUMA-INFORMED SUPPORT GROUPS TO NEW NEIGHBORHOODS AND ENGAGED PARENTS MONTHLY AT WEST BALTIMORE SCHOOLS. CU ALSO PROMOTED COMMUNITY SCHOOLS AS AN ESSENTIAL STRATEGY TO PROVIDE SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL SUPPORTS TO YOUTH LIVING IN CONCENTRATED POVERTY AND COPING WITH TRAUMA. BUILDING FOR JUSTICE AND EQUITY: CONTINUED TO ORGANIZE PEOPLE WHO ARE FORMERLY INCARCERATED, WHO STRUGGLE WITH ADDICTION OR ARE IN RECOVERY, AND THEIR FAMILIES TO LEAD CHANGE THAT IMPROVES THEIR QUALITY OF LIFE. CU ORGANIZED REGULAR MEETINGS AND EVENTS TO EDUCATE COMMUNITIES ABOUT THE FAILURES OF THE DRUG WAR AND TO PROMOTE PUBLIC HEALTH SOLUTIONS TO CRIME AND OVERDOSES. WE LAUNCHED OUR MORAL BUDGET BALTIMORE INITIATIVE TO DEMAND NEW PRIORITY INVESTMENTS IN YOUTH, SCHOOLS AND COMMUNITIES BY ENDING OVERSPENDING ON POLICE, CRIMINALIZATION, AND INCARCERATION. OUR GOTV EFFORTS PROVIDED SHUTTLES TO THE POLLS FOR NEEDY RESIDENTS DURING EARLY VOTING DAYS IN OCTOBER.
