Organizations Filed Purposes:
TO PROVIDE AN ALUMNI ASSOCIATION FOR GRADUATES OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND MEDICAL SCHOOL TO ENHANCE EFFORTS IN CARRYING ON THE EDUCATIONAL MISSION OF THE SCHOOL, AND PRESERVE A HISTORIC TEACHING FACILITY FOR USE BY ALUMNI AND STUDENTS NOW AND IN THE FUTURE.
TO ENHANCE EFFORTS IN CARRYING ON THE EDUCATIONAL MISSION OF THE U OF MD MEDICAL SCHOOL.
SUPPORT OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND MEDICAL SCHOOL:THE MAA RAISED $2,087,789 IN GIFTS TO BENEFIT THE MEDICAL SCHOOL. OF THIS AMOUNT, $1,150,016 WAS DISTRIBUTED DIRECTLY FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND. A PORTION OF THESE GIFTS WERE APPLIED TOWARD PROGRAMS AND SERVICES FOR 10,000 ALUMNI, FACULTY, STUDENTS, AND FRIENDS OF THE MEDICAL SCHOOL. MORE THAN $50,000 OF THE FUNDING WAS GENERATED BY THE ANNUAL PHONATHON, STAFFED BY MORE THAN 75 VOLUNTEER ALUMNI AND STUDENTS DURING A 5-NIGHT DRIVE. WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF THE UMB OFFICE OF FINANCIAL AID, THE MAA CONTINUED TO ADMINISTER 5 STUDENT LOAN FUNDS: THE MAA REVOLVING STUDENT LOAN FUND; ROWLAND STUDENT LOAN FUND; ROGERS LOAN FUND; WHITE EMERGENCY LOAN FUND; AND HOFFMAN EMERGENCY LOAN FUND. THESE FUNDS, TURNED OVER TO THE UNIVERSITY IN FY20, ARE VALUED AT APPROXIMATELY $800,000.
JOINT SPONSORSHIP OF "THE BULLETIN" MAGAZINE:FOUR ISSUES OF "THE BULLETIN" WERE PUBLISHED AND MAILED TO MORE THAN 10,000 ALUMNI, FACULTY, FRIENDS, AND STUDENTS OF THE MEDICAL SCHOOL AND EMAILED TO THOUSANDS MORE. AN EDITORIAL BOARD, CONSISTING OF MORE THAN 20 ALUMNI AND MEDICAL SCHOOL REPRESENTATIVES, PROVIDED GUIDANCE AND EDITORIAL ASSISTANCE IN THE MAGAZINE'S PRODUCTION. THE BULLETIN IS RECOGNIZED AS THE OLDEST MEDICAL ALUMNI PUBLICATION IN THE UNITED STATES.
ALUMNI AND STUDENT RELATED ACTIVITIES:THE ANNUAL REUNION WAS CANCELLED THIS YEAR DUE TO THE PANDEMIC. THE MEDICAL ALUMNI ASSOCIATION ("MAA") SPONSORED RECEPTIONS AT THE NATIONAL MEDICAL ASSOCIATION, AMERICAN ACADEMY OF OPHTHALMOLOGY, AND AMERICAN ACADEMY OF SURGEONS. IT ALSO SERVED AS PRESENTING SPONSOR FOR THE MEDICAL SCHOOL'S "CELEBRATING DIVERSITY" DINNER IN FEBRUARY. ALL ALUMNI EVENTS SCHEDULED FROM MARCH UNTIL THE END OF THE FISCAL YEAR WERE CANCELLED. THIS WAS ALSO THE CASE WITH STUDENT ACTIVITIES, AS THE FRESHMAN WHITE COAT CEREMONY AND JUNIOR CLINICIAN CEREMONY WERE STAGED EARLIER IN THE YEAR, BUT THE SPRING MATCH DAY WAS CANCELLED.
