FOS AMPLIFIES THE COLLECTIVE IMPACT OF THE GLOBAL CONSERVATION COMMUNITY BY PROVIDING PRACTITIONERS WITH THE SKILLS AND TOOLS NEEDED TO BE MORE EFFECTIVE AND EFFICIENT IN THEIR EFFORTS TO FOSTER THRIVING ECOSYSTEMS, CONSERVE NATURAL RESOURCES, AND ADVANCE HUMAN WELL-BEING. THIS MISSION SUPPORTS OUR 3 'FOUNDATIONS OF SUCCESS':FOUNDATION 1: DEFINE CLEAR AND PRACTICAL MEASURES OF CONSERVATION SUCCESS.FOUNDATION 2: DETERMINE SOUND GUIDING PRINCIPLES FOR USING CONSERVATION STRATEGIES AND TOOLS.FOUNDATION 3: DEVELOP AND STRENGTHEN PRACTITIONER KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS IN ADAPTIVE MANAGEMENT.
FOS HELPS PRACTITIONERS, FUNDERS, AND EDUCATORS ACROSS THE CONSERVATION COMMUNITY AMPLIFY THEIR EFFORTS TO MANAGE SUCCESSFUL PROJECTS, DEMONSTRATE CONSERVATION IMPACT, AND INFLUENCE KEY DECISION-MAKERS TO HELP PROTECT OUR PLANET. OUR WORK CENTERS AROUND THESE STRATEGIES: PROVIDE TRAINING & COACHING, FACILITATE COLLABORATIVE LEARNING, DEVELOP FRAMEWORKS & TOOLS, AND BUILD CAPACITY FOR THE FUTURE.
DEVELOP FRAMEWORKS & TOOLS - FOS DEVELOPS INTELLECTUALLY RIGOROUS YET USER-FRIENDLY FRAMEWORKS AND TOOLS TO OVERCOME THE PRACTICAL HURDLES OF PLANNING AND MONITORING CONSERVATION PROJECTS. USING INSIGHTS GAINED FROM OUR EXPERIENCE WORKING WITH DIFFERENT TEAMS AND ACROSS DISCIPLINES, WE IDENTIFY THE INNOVATIONS AND ADAPTATIONS REQUIRED TO MAKE PROJECT MANAGEMENT BETTER AND EASIER. ACCOMPLISHMENTS INCLUDE:- LAUNCHED MIRADI SHARE 2.0 WHICH FEATURES A NEW PROFESSIONALLY DESIGNED USER INTERFACE, ENHANCED TECHNICAL PERFORMANCE, AND THE ABILITY TO EDIT MANY KEY DATA FIELDS DIRECTLY ONLINE. THIS RELEASE REPRESENTS AN IMPORTANT MILESTONE IN BRINGING MIRADI SOFTWARE FULLY INTO THE CLOUD ENVIRONMENT.- HELD SEVERAL OUTREACH EVENTS FOLLOWING UP ON PUBLICATION OF FOS CO-AUTHORED PAPER.- DEVELOPED ANNOTATED THEORIES OF CHANGE FOR KEY TOPICS OF INTEREST TO THE GORDON AND BETTY MOORE FOUNDATION (USING JURISDICTIONAL APPROACHES TO REDUCE DEFORESTATION WITH MOORE AND USING FELLOWSHIPS TO INCREASE THE CAPACITY OF THE CONSERVATION COMMUNITY).- FINALIZED AND RELEASED AN FOS GUIDE ON M&E DESIGN.
PROVIDE TRAINING AND COACHING - FOS HELPS CONSERVATION TEAMS DEFINE CLEAR CONSERVATION GOALS, PRIORITIZE STRATEGIES WITH THE GREATEST LIKELIHOOD OF SUCCESS, AND USE PRACTICAL TOOLS AND SYSTEMS TO SUPPORT THEIR CONSERVATION WORK. FOS PROVIDES TRAINING AND COACHING IN METHODS AND TOOLS SO THAT TEAMS CAN LEARN WHAT'S WORKING AND ADAPT ACCORDINGLY. BY SYSTEMATICALLY PLANNING AND MEASURING, CONSERVATION TEAMS CAN LEARN FROM THEIR SUCCESSES AND FAILURES AND USE RESOURCES MORE EFFICIENTLY. ACCOMPLISHMENTS INCLUDE:- PROVIDED SUPPORT FOR PLANNING AND ADAPTING TO USAID MISSIONS AND OFFICES AROUND THE WORLD (INCLUDING THE BUREAU FOR LATIN AMERICA AND THE CARIBBEAN, THE SOUTH AMERICAN REGION / PERU MISSION, USAID/MADAGASCAR, USAID/COLOMBIA, AND THE CENTRAL AFRICA REGIONAL PROGRAMME FOR THE ENVIRONMENT.- PRESENTED A WEBINAR TO THE WORLD BANK'S GLOBAL WILDLIFE PROGRAM ON OUR FINDINGS OF THE 20-YEAR RETROSPECTIVE ON ENTERPRISE APPROACHES SUPPORTED BY USAID.- HELPED SUMMIT FOUNDATION STAFF AND BOARD REVISE THE FOUNDATION'S STRATEGIC PLAN FOR CONSERVATION INVESTMENTS IN THE MESOAMERICAN REEF (APPROVED IN NOVEMBER 2019).- USFWS ATLANTIC COAST JOINT VENTURE RELEASED ITS SALT MARSH CONSERVATION PLAN, A PROCESS SUPPORTED BY FOS.
FOSTER COMMUNITIES OF PRACTICE - FOS CONVENES CONSERVATION PRACTITIONERS, DONORS, AND EDUCATORS IN VIBRANT LEARNING COMMUNITIES. FOS HELPS THESE COMMUNITIES DEVELOP AND PROMOTE COMMON FRAMEWORKS TO CATALYZE CROSS-PROJECT SHARING AND LEARNING. THE RESULT OF THIS COORDINATION IS IMPROVED CONSERVATION PRACTICES, THE ABILITY TO DEMONSTRATE COLLECTIVE IMPACT, AND INCREASED SOCIETAL SUPPORT FOR CONSERVATION. ACCOMPLISHMENTS INCLUDE:- ORGANIZED AND HOSTED CONSERVATION MEASURES PARTNERSHIP'S (CMP) BIENNIAL RETREAT, FOCUSED ON BRINGING MEMBERS TOGETHER TO SHARE AND LEARN FROM ONE ANOTHER.- FACILITATED PARTICIPATORY PROCESS TO DEVELOP CONSERVATION STANDARDS V. 4.0. TECHNICAL TEXT FINALIZED IN 2019; FORMATTED VERSIONS RELEASED IN 2020.- DEVELOPED INTERNAL COORDINATION WEBSITE TO FOSTER GREATER SHARING AND COLLABORATION AMONG CMP MEMBERS.
