Renewable Energy: The Renewable Energy program analyzes the technical and economic aspects of a transition to a renewable energy system, primarily wind and solar energy. In 2019, the Renewable Maryland plan was updated, extrapolated to the national level and submitted to the US House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis. IEER also participated in a working group of the Maryland Commission on Climate Change; a coalition to promote access to solar energy for low-income households in Maryland; and the Green New Deal conference in Washington, DC in April 2019. IEER reviewed indoor air pollution issues arising from fossil fuels and drafted a study on offshore wind energy development potential and requirements.
Nuclear: The Nuclear program examines economic, technical, and health issues associated with nuclear power and whether nuclear power is a useful energy source for climate change mitigation. In 2019, IEER researched the electricity system of Puerto Rico and made a presentation by video to Puerto Rican audiences; continued research on the health effects of tritium; participated in an independent safety review of the Hanford Plutonium Finishing Plant; was interviewed by the BBC on public perceptions of radiation health risks; and wrote blogs on the decision to bomb Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Healthy Soils: The Healthy Soils program studies carbon sequestration and methane mitigation aspects of regenerative agriculture and ways that renewable energy and regenerative agriculture can be joined. In 2019, IEER examined land use and carbon sequestration scenarios and their implications for climate change; worked with other NGOs on a process for creating a roadmap for converting one million acres of Maryland agricultural land to healthy soil practices; began research on the economic case for regenerative agriculture in Maryland; and researched the role of methanotrophic bacteria in destroying methane in soil pores.
