The mission of the Shock Society is to improve the care of victims of trauma, shock, and sepsis, through research, education, mentoring and providing a forum for discussion.

Annual meeting - scientific conference for presentation, education and dissemination of information related to shock, trauma, burns and sepsis. Abstracts of research work are submitted by members and non-members. The awards committee reviews abstracts to determine those that are accepted for oral and poster presentation. Speakers are invited for each session and we also invite a keynote speaker who is a notable researcher in a related research area. Both clinical and basic science research is presented and sessions reflect both. We have separate lunch time and evening education and information sessions, as well as poster sessions.

Journal and journal expenses - The Shock journal is run by founding member Dr. Irshad Chaudry, the editor-in-chief, and is one of the premier scientific journals for publication of shock, trauma, burns, sepsis and resuscitation research. The current publisher is Wolters Kluwer and we have a contract with them which provides a guaranteed sum every year plus quarterly royalties, dependent on subscriptions. From this revenue the Shock Society provides financial support for the Shock journal editorial office, plus an honorarium for the EIC. A portion of each member dues is also returned back to the journal as subscription costs, which are billed to quarterly.

Awards and grants - The Shock society provides a large number of travel awards to offset costs for trainees and students to travel to and attend the annual meeting. These awards are based on quality of abstract submission as determined by the Awards Committee. We also have separate awards for under-represented minority applicants to attend the meeting. This is based on need and quality of research in the abstract submission as determined by the Diversity committee. There are 6 new investigator awards based on quality of abstracts by trainees as determined by Awards committee. These winners get an oral presentation and an additional amount awarded. We also award two new research grant awards: one to a trainee member, one to a faculty researcher. These awards are based on submissions of a grant prior to the annual meeting and decided by the Awards committee, and are for up to 2 years of research work.
