Our mission is to inspire and challenge youth through mental, physical, and social activities that foster self-respect and respect for the world around them.
I Believe in Me partnered with local businesses and community organizations to provide high-quality fresh foods to the community members most in need on a no-questions asked basis within the communities most affected by the pandemic. We first identified this need when youth participating in our program began communicating that they had siblings and family members in need, often due to loss of income resulting from pandemic shutdowns. The food distribution has expanded to distributing biweekly food distributions to over 275 families in about an hour's time through the effort of dozens of dedicated volunteers and generous support from local businesses, residents, government agencies, and private foundations. While we are still working to identify other local organizations who are wiling and capable of continuing the distribution program we have started, it is clear that the long term need of the community we serve is continuing to grow.
I Believe in Me's core service program continues to be operating a youth mentoring program for youth from 6 to 16 years old from at-risk backgrounds in our community. This is accomplished primarily through our after school program during the school year and our summer program in summer months. Participation in the program continued to grow in FY2019. Our waiting list grew to over 60 youths before the pandemic hit in early 2020. The physical restrictions of the pandemic required some creative adjustments to the way we provided mentorship. Zoom meetings, establishing a 24-hour help line, and delivering food and hygiene products were among the many ways our program adapted in the early part of 2020. With the start of the fall 2020 school year, we have secured a temporary home for in-person mentorship that allows for proper social distancing at the DRCC Church in New Market, MD. We look forward to obtaining a permanent home for the program in the coming year in Frederick City.
