The 100 Black Men of Prince Georges County strives to provide caring and transformative leadership and mentoring guidance that encourages, engages and challenges African-American youth and young adults to exceed their personal expectations.
Mentoring is the foundation of Saturday Leadership Academy. Leveraging limited resources of time and money necessitates the concentration of the majority of our mentoring programs under the Saturday Leadership Academy (SLA) moniker. We offered Bi-monthly virtual meetings for our Tier 1 mentees and Quarterly offerings for our Tier 2 Mentees to fill the gap for those Mentees that cannot fully commit. We offer targeted sessions in other programs to offer a full spectrum offering for our community. We established Virtual 1-on-1 Mentoring as an ongoing resource for our mentees and engaged County Officials to provide relevant information to mentees and parents/guardians. We conducted weekly Real Talk sessions every Tuesday from 6:00-7:00pm that provided a safe venue for our mentees to discuss issues of importance to them. We held monthly or bi-monthly (one-hour session) that were co-facilitated (100 Mentors and a Parent), panel discussion, or Coffee and Conversation Roundtable, such as adjusting to a New Lifestyle: Managing Home, Work, and Virtual Learning.
We consider the transformation of education as one of the critical civil rights issues of our time; and staunchly believe that all youth, regardless of race and socio-economic status, must have access to quality education to become ready to compete in a global society. Knowledge is power if you have access to it and can properly apply it. Our network of 100 Black Men Chapters provided student support and wrap-around services to help youth achieve successful grade level advancements, on-time graduation from high school and post-secondary institutions, and realize their educational, personal and professional goals. The Boys Read Club has been expanded from just reading to writing, speaking and general communicative skills our mentees shall need throughout life. Collaborated with Bowie State University and established the Collegiate 100 of Bowie State University as an auxiliary of the organization of the 100 Black Men of Prince Georges County, Inc. The program serves to help young African American students (Men and Women) to put forth their best efforts in attaining better living conditions and socially equal standing.
The 100 Health and Wellness focuses on the well-being of the whole person: physical, emotional, psychological, and spiritual. The 100, through its Health and Wellness Committee, works with other synergistic organizations to develop strategic partnerships to raise a collective voice to help increase awareness and provide health education to mitigate chronic conditions and diseases that plague the Black community. We partnered with the 100 Black Men of America, Inc and successfully launched a National Health Care 2.0 for 50 pilot sites including our chapter. We also partnered with our National 100 organization & Radio One Media to launch a National radio / media digital campaign focused on reaching our targeted population. In response to constraints imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, we conducted a virtual fitness challenge intended to encourage health activities and encourage donor support. We held weekly virtual Golf sessions for 30 mentees focused on critical thinking and self-directed learning.
