FGCB exists to inspire low income and first-generation youth to achieve their social and economic success by providing advice, encouragement, and support to obtain a college degree.
The College Success program, which added one high site during the 2019-20 academic year, is supporting 181 students from the start of the college access process through college graduation. FGCB's Great Minds Great Futures program (9th, 10th and 11th grade students at four high schools) encourages more low- income students to take advantage of the state's Howard P. Rawlings' Guaranteed Access (GA) grant to attend college. With 293 participating students, GMGW met its recruitment goal. 164 FGCB students completed the FAFSA, 7 students have completed the MSFAA, 165 high school seniors (92%) leveraged over $1 million in financial aid, successfully matriculating to college. FGCB also recognized 26 college graduates who earned an associates degree, 69 students who earned a bachelor's degree, and 6 students who received graduate degrees.
In our Homework Club, located in the Kimberly Gardens community, two certified teachers provided homework help to students (Grades 1 -12), maintaining a ratio of one teacher per 15 students. Students also hear from inspirational speakers, attend field trips, including college tours; and participate in a year-end celebration that recognizes students' improved academic performance. The Club met its recruitment goal of 30 students, an increase over the prior year.
