ASCB IS AN INCLUSIVE, INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY OF BIOLOGISTS STUDYING THE CELL, THE FUNDAMENTAL UNIT OF LIFE. WE ARE DEDICATED TO ADVANCING SCIENTIFIC DISCOVERY, ADVOCATING SOUND RESEARCH POLICIES, IMPROVING EDUCATION, PROMOTING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, AND INCREASING DIVERSITY AND INCLUSIVITY IN THE SCIENTIFIC WORKFORCE.
SEE PART III, LINE 1.
ANNUAL MEETING - THE ANNUAL SCIENTIFIC MEETING TRADITIONALLY IS HELD FOR FIVE DAYS IN DECEMBER AND IS ATTENDED BY ABOUT 6,000 PEOPLE. IT INCLUDES SCIENTIFIC SYMPOSIA SUMMARIZING RECENT ADVANCES IN CELL BIOLOGY, AND PRESENTATION OF APPROXIMATELY 3,000 SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH FINDINGS. THE ABSTRACTS OF SCIENTIFIC PAPERS FROM THE ANNUAL MEETING ARE PUBLISHED ANNUALLY BY THE SOCIETY. THE MEETING ALSO FEATURES COMMERCIAL EXHIBITS OF PRODUCTS AND SERVICES FOR SCIENTISTS WORKING IN THE FIELD OF BIOLOGY. THE EXHIBITS INCLUDE SCIENTIFIC INSTRUMENTS, LABORATORY EQUIPMENT, CHEMICALS, AND PUBLICATIONS. THE ANNUAL MEETING ALSO FEATURES EXTENSIVE EDUCATION, CAREER, PUBLIC POLICY AND SESSIONS OF SPECIAL INTEREST TO UNDERREPRESENTED MINORITIES AND WOMEN.
JOURNAL AND OTHER PUBLICATIONS - THE ASCB OWNS AND PUBLISHES THE SCIENTIFIC JOURNAL MOLECULAR BIOLOGY OF THE CELL, THE QUARTERLY JOURNAL CBE - LIFE SCIENCES EDUCATION, AND THE ASCB NEWSLETTER, PUBLISHED 6 TIMES A YEAR.
NIH IPERT GRANT - THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF HEALTH, NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF GENERAL MEDICAL SCIENCES IPERT (INNOVATIVE PROGRAMS TO ENHANCE RESEARCH TRAINING) GRANT FUNDS THE MAJORITY OF THE PROGRAMS OF THE ASCB MINORITY AFFAIRS COMMITTEE (MAC). THE MAC'S GOAL IS TO SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASE THE INVOLVEMENT OF UNDERREPRESENTED MINORITY SCIENTISTS IN ALL ASPECTS OF THE ASCB AND CELL BIOLOGY. TO ACHIEVE THIS GOAL, THE MAC OFFERS MANY PROGRAMS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR TO PROMOTE THE RECRUITMENT AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OF MINORITY SCIENTISTS. THE RELATIVELY SMALL POOL OF MINORITY SCIENTISTS WITH AN INTEREST IN CELL BIOLOGY REQUIRES THAT MAC ALSO DEVELOP PROGRAMS FOR UNDERGRADUATE AND PRE-DOCTORAL STUDENTS TO ASSIST THEM IN ACHIEVING CAREERS IN BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH. A LONG RANGE GOAL OF THE MAC IS TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE NATION'S EFFORT TO INCREASE THE NUMBER OF UNDERREPRESENTED MINORITY SCIENTISTS.
