ARTS FOR THE AGING WAS FOUNDED IN 1988 AFTER A STUDY SHOWED THAT ART-MAKING IMPROVED MOODS AND BEHAVIORS IN PEOPLE WITH ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE. TODAY AFTA IS A NATIONALLY-RECOGNIZED SOCIAL SERVICE ORGANIZATION SERVING GREATER WASHINGTON DC, ENGAGING OLDER ADULTS AND THEIR CARE GIVERS IN HEALTH IMPROVEMENT AND LIFE ENHANCEMENT THROUGH REGULAR PARTICIPATION IN THE MULTIDISCIPLINARY ARTS. AFTA'S THERAPEUTIC INTERVENTIONS FOCUS ESPECIALLY ON THOSE EXPERIENCING AGING-RELATED PHYSICAL AND COGNITIVE IMPAIRMENTS AND CAN INCLUDE TRAININGS FOR PRACTITIONERS IN OUR STRUCTURED IMPROVISATION METHODS. WORKSHOPS ARE CUSTOMIZED FROM A CURRICULUM OF DANCE AND CREATIVE MOVEMENT, MUSIC, CREATIVE WRITING, EXPRESSIVE ARTS, VISUAL ART, ART HISTORY, STORYTELLING, POETRY, MUSICAL THEATRE, INTER-DISCIPLINARY, THEATRICAL IMPROVISATION, DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY/VIDEOGRAPHY, THEATRICAL PLAYWRITING, MUSEUM OUTINGS, INTERGENERATIONAL WORKSHOPS, AND ARTIST AND CAREGIVER TRAININGS IN OUR STRUCTURED IMPROVISATION METHODS.
AFTA ENGAGES OLDER ADULTS IN HEALTH IMPROVEMENT AND LIFE ENHANCEMENT THROUGH THE ARTS.
A MULTIDISCIPLINARY, PAID ARTISTIC FACULTY, TRAINED IN OUR BEST-PRACTICES, DELIVER PERSON-CENTERED ARTS EXPERIENCES IN GROUP SETTINGS TO OLDER ADULTS AND CARE GIVERS WHOSE ACCESS TO THESE KINDS OF LIFE ENRICHMENT INTERVENTIONS IS LIMITED FOR REASONS OF AFFORDABILITY, AVAILABILITY, OR THE ABILITY TO USE SUCH PROGRAMS. 603 MULTIDISCIPLINARY ARTS WORKSHOPS, TRAININGS, MUSEUM TRIPS IMPACTED 1,195 OLDER ADULTS, 234 PROFESSIONAL/FAMILY/ARTIST CAREGIVERS, AND TOOK PLACE REGULARLY IN 50 COMMUNITY AND RESIDENTIAL CARE SETTINGS: ADULT DAY CENTERS, COMMUNITY CENTERS, SENIOR CENTERS, AFFORDABLE HOUSING CENTERS, ASSISTED LIVING COMMUNITIES, NURSING HOMES, AND WITH MUSEUMS AND CULTURAL INSTITUTIONS. 310 COMMUNITY MEMBERS ATTENDED AFTA LECTURES, PERFORMANCES AND ART EXHIBITIONS.
