Organizations Filed Purposes: FOUNDED IN 1922, THE ORGANIZATION ASSISTS AMERICAN INDIAN AND ALASKA NATIVE COMMUNITIES IN THEIR EFFORTS TO ACHIEVE FULL ECONOMIC, SOCIAL AND CIVIC EQUALITY, AND TO DEFEND THEIR RIGHTS. AAIA IS GOVERNED BY A BOARD OF DIRECTORS CONSISTING OF PROMINENT NATIVE AMERICAN PEOPLE FROM SUCH FIELDS OF LAW, EDUCATION, HEALTH AND PUBLIC SERVICES AND IS FUNDED BY ITS MEMBERS AND CONTRIBUTORS.

TO ASSIST AMERICAN INDIAN AND ALASKA NATIVE COMMUNITIES IN THEIR EFFORTS TO ACHIEVE FULL ECONOMIC, SOCIAL AND CIVIL EQUALITY, AND TO DEFEND THEIR RIGHTS.

AAIA'S REPATRIATION AND SACRED SITE PROGRAM: 1) PROVIDES A CENTRALIZED INFORMATION HUB OF EXPERTISE AND INFORMATION THAT PROVIDES TRAINING AND TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE ON ISSUES OF REPATRIATION OF CULTURAL ITEMS, ANCESTORS AND BURIAL ITEMS DOMESTICALLY AND ABROAD; AND ON PROTECTION OF SACRED SITES AND ITEMS LOOTED FROM SITES; 2) DEVELOPS TEMPLATES, TOOLKITS AND MODEL LAWS THAT CAN BE USED BY TRIBES TO SUPPORT REPATRIATION AND SACRED SITE PROTECTION; 3) ADVOCATES FOR STRONGER LAWS AND POLICIES THAT SUPPORT REPATRIATION EFFORTS AND PROTECT SACRED SITES; AND 4) RAISES AWARENESS AND PROVIDES EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES ABOUT REPATRIATION AND SACRED SITE PROTECTION.

INDIAN CHILDREN & YOUTH: AAIA HAS WORKED ACTIVELY IN THE FIELD OF INDIAN CHILD WELFARE FOR MORE THAN SIX DECADES PROVIDING EXTENSIVE TRAINING, DEVELOPING STUDIES AND ANALYSIS, AND EDUCATING TRIBES, FEDERAL, STATE AND LOCAL GOVERNMENTS TO PROTECT INDIAN CHILDREN AND YOUTH. AAIA DEVELOPED STUDIES AND ADVOCACY THAT WERE THE CATALYST FOR THE PASSAGE OF THE INDIAN CHILD WELFARE ACT OF 1978 (ICWA), AND FOR THE NEW BUREAU OF INDIAN AFFAIRS REGULATIONS IMPLEMENTING THE ICWA IN 2016. AAIA HAS CONVENED TRIBAL LEADERS AND JUVENILE JUSTICE EXPERTS TO EXPLORE HOW TRIBES CAN BENEFIT FROM ALTERNATIVES TO YOUTH INCARCERATION. AAIA SEEKS TO DOCUMENT AND ADDRESS DISPARITIES IN THE TREATMENT OF NATIVE AMERICAN CHILDREN AND YOUTH BY FEDERAL AND STATE COURTS, AND UNCOVER IMPROPER INCENTIVES USED TO REMOVE NATIVE AMERICAN CHILDREN FROM THEIR COMMUNITIES FOR ADOPTION TO NON-INDIAN FAMILIES.

OTHER PROGRAMS INCLUDING SCHOLARSHIPS, SUMMER CAMPS, LEGAL ADVOCACY AND PUBLIC EDUCATION. AAIA IS DEDICATED TO SUPPORTING THE EDUCATION OF NATIVE AMERICAN AND ALASKA NATIVE PEOPLE AND OFFERS SCHOLARSHIPS TO UNDERGRADUATE AND GRADUATE STUDENTS FROM FEDERALLY AND NON-FEDERALLY RECOGNIZED TRIBES. AAIA ALSO SUPPORTS YOUTH EDUCATION BY PROVIDING GRANTS TO NATIVE YOUTH SUMMER CAMPTS TO DEVELOP PROGRAMMING DEDICATED TO HEALTH AND CULTURAL IDENTITY. AAIA ALSO UTILIZES ITS WEBSITE AND SOCIAL MEDIA TO EDUCATE THE PUBLIC ABOUT NATIVE AMERICAN AND INDIAN COUNTRY ISSUES, AND INCREASING SUPPORT FOR TRIBAL SOVEREIGNTY, THE PROTECTION OF CULTURE AND EDUCATING YOUTH IN THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT.
