THE BIOPHYSICAL SOCIETY CONVENES AND CONNECTS A GLOBAL COMMUNITY OF SCIENTISTS WORKING AT THE INTERFACE OF THE PHYSICAL AND LIFE SCIENCES AND CREATES, SHARES, AND ADVOCATES FOR BIOPHYSICAL KNOWLEDGE AND METHODS THROUGH PROGRAMS AND COMMUNITIES THAT SUPPORT BIOPHYSICS.
ANNUAL MEETING-BPS' ANNUAL MEETING FACILITATES THE SHARING OF INFORMATION AND RESEARCH IN THE BIOPHYSICAL SCIENCES. OVER 5,000 PEOPLE ATTENDED THE MEETING. 3,327 ABSTRACTS WERE PRESENTED, AS WERE NUMEROUS LECTURES AND SYMPOSIA. THE 63RD ANNUAL MEETING WAS HELD MARCH 2-6, 2019 IN BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
JOURNALS-THE BIOPHYSICAL JOURNAL IS A SEMIMONTHLY PUBLICATION OF BPS. IT INCLUDES ORIGINAL ARTICLES, LETTERS AND REVIEWS ON MOLECULAR, CELLULAR AND GENERAL BIOPHYSICS. AREAS COVERED INCLUDE: BIOENERGETICS, BIOPHYSICAL THEORY AND MODELING, CHANNELS/RECEPTORS/TRANSPORTERS, CELL BIOPHYSICS, ELECTROPHYSIOLOGY, MEMBRANES, MUSCLE AND CONTRACTILITY, NUCLEIC ACIDS, PHOTOBIOPHYSICS, PROTEINS, SPECTROSCOPY, AND SUPRAMOLECULAR ASSEMBLIES.THE BIOPHYSICIST PUBLICATION AIMS TO HIGHLIGHT AND NURTURE EDUCATION, AND ITS SCHOLARSHIP AND DEVELOPMENT. THE JOURNAL SERVES A WORLDWIDE, BROAD AUDIENCE TO MAKE FUNDAMENTAL CONCEPTS AND TECHNIQUES IN BIOPHYSICS (AND RELATED DISCIPLINES), AS WELL AS EVIDENCE-BASED PEDAGOGICAL PRACTICE ACCESSIBLE TO INDIVIDUALS AT ALL LEVELS: K-12 AND PUBLIC OUTREACH, UNDERGRADUATE, GRADUATE AND POST-GRADUATE STUDENTS/TRAINEES, ACTIVE RESEARCHERS, AND SCHOLARS OF BIOPHYSICS TEACHING AND LEARNING. THIS GOAL WILL BE ACHIEVED BY BOTH ACADEMIC ARTICLES AND INFORMAL REPORTS THAT REFLECT THE INTERDISCIPLINARY NATURE OF BIOPHYSICS EDUCATION AND THE ACTIVITIES OF BIOPHYSICISTS IN A VARIETY OF SCIENTIFIC FIELDS.
PUBLIC AFFAIRS-BPS INVESTS IN PUBLIC POLICY EFFORTS ON BEHALF OF ITS MEMBERS AND THE SCIENCE OF BIOPHYSICS. THE BIOPHYSICAL SOCIETY, THROUGH ITS PUBLIC AFFAIRS COMMITTEE (PAC), KEEPS SOCIETY MEMBERS CURRENT ON RELEVANT LEGISLATION AND SCIENCE POLICY ISSUES. THE SOCIETY HAS TAKEN THE INITIATIVE IN ADVOCATING FOR INCREASED FUNDING AT THE INTERFACE BETWEEN THE LIFE SCIENCES AND PHYSICAL SCIENCES.
