AT THE NATIONAL ALLIANCE ON MENTAL ILLNESS OF MONTGOMERY COUNTY MD (NAMI MC), WE ENVISION A FUTURE WHERE ALL PEOPLE AFFECTED BY MENTAL HEALTH CONDITIONS LIVE HEALTHY, FULFILLING LIVES SUPPORTED BY A COMMUNITY THAT CARES. TO REACH THIS VISION, WE BUILD COMMUNITIES OF PEERS TO PROVIDE SUPPORT, EDUCATION, AND ADVOCACY FOR ALL AFFECTED BY MENTAL HEALTH CONDITIONS. OUR COMMUNITIES OF PEERS INCLUDE PEOPLE LIVING WITH MENTAL HEALTH CONDITIONS, THEIR CAREGIVERS AND FAMILIES, AND ALLIES.
NAMI MONTGOMERY COUNTY BUILDS COMMUNITIES OF PEERS TO PROVIDE SUPPORT, EDUCATION AND ADVOCACY FOR ALL AFFECTED BY MENTAL HEALTH CONDITIONS.
NAMI MONTGOMERY COUNTYFS PROGRAMS SERVE INDIVIDUALS, CAREGIVERS, AND ALLIE OF PEOPLE LIVING WITH MENTAL ILLNESS IN MONTGOMERY COUNTY. OUR PROGRAMS ARE FREE TO PARTICIPANTS AND LED BY TRAINED VOLUNTEERS WITH LIVED EXPERIENCE, EITHER MAINTAINING RECOVERY WITH A MENTAL ILLNESS OR CARING FOR A LOVED ONE LIVING WITH MENTAL ILLNESS. OUR PROGRAMS AIM TO DEVELOP SUPPORTIVE RELATIONSHIPS, STRENGTHEN COPING SKILLS, PROMOTE EMPATHY, AND FOSTER AN UNDERSTANDING THAT MENTAL HEALTH CONDITIONS ARE NO ONE'S FAULT. PARTICIPANTS LEARN HOW TO PREVENT AND RESPOND TO CRISES AND HOW TO EFFECTIVELY ADVOCATE FOR THEMSELVES AND THEIR LOVED ONES. AS THE LEADING PEER-LED MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT ORGANIZATION IN MONTGOMERY COUNTY, NAMI MC'S MISSION IS INCREASINGLY IMPORTANT DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC THAT HAS EXACERBATED MENTAL HEALTH STRESSORS. THE INCREASE IN MENTAL HEALTH NEEDS HAS CREATED TREMENDOUS STRESS ON OUR UNDER-RESOURCED MENTAL HEALTH TREATMENT INFRASTRUCTURE. NAMI MCFS PROGRAMS ARE NEEDED MORE THAN EVER. NAMI MC CLASSES NAMI MC'S SIGNATURE PROGRAMS INCLUDE THE EIGHT-WEEK 20-HOUR NAMI FAMILY- TO-FAMILY CLASS AND THE SIX-WEEK 15-HOUR NAMI BASICS CLASS THAT AIM TO EDUCATE CAREGIVERS AND PARENTS OF INDIVIDUALS LIVING WITH MENTAL ILLNESS. THESE CLASSES FOR CAREGIVERS NOT ONLY TEACH INFORMATION AND STRATEGIES FOR TAKING CARE OF THE PERSON THEY LOVE, BUT THEY ALSO PROVIDE GROUP SETTINGS THAT PROVIDE MUTUAL SUPPORT AND SHARED POSITIVE IMPACT. PARTICIPANTS LEARN THAT THEY ARE NOT ALONE AND GAIN VALUABLE SUPPORT FROM A COMMUNITY THAT UNDERSTANDS WHAT THEY ARE GOING THROUGH. PARTICIPANTS LEARN: - PROBLEM-SOLVING AND EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION SKILLS - SELF-CARE AND STRESS MANAGEMENT - HOW TO SUPPORT THEIR LOVED ONE WITH COMPASSION - HOW TO FIND AND USE LOCAL SUPPORTS AND SERVICES - HOW TO NAVIGATE SCHOOL AND JUSTICE SYSTEMS - UP-TO-DATE INFORMATION ON MENTAL HEALTH CONDITIONS AND HOW THEY AFFECT THE BRAIN - CRISIS MANAGEMENT - CURRENT TREATMENTS AND THERAPIES - THE IMPACT OF MENTAL HEALTH CONDITIONS ON THE ENTIRE FAMILY NAMI PEER-TO-PEER IS AN EIGHT-WEEK 16-HOUR CLASS FOR ADULTS LIVING WITH A MENTAL HEALTH CONDITION WHO ARE LOOKING TO BETTER UNDERSTAND THEMSELVES AND THEIR RECOVERY. THIS CLASS INCLUDES ACTIVITIES, DISCUSSIONS, AND INFORMATIVE VIDEOS IN A SAFE CONFIDENTIAL SPACE THAT ENCOURAGES MUTUAL SUPPORT AND GROWTH. PARTICIPANTS LEARN: - TO SET A VISION AND GOALS FOR THE FUTURE - HOW TO PARTNER WITH HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS - CONFIDENCE IN DECISION MAKING - RELAXATION AND STRESS REDUCTION TOOLS - THE POWER OF SHARING YOUR STORY - HOW TO STRENGTHEN RELATIONSHIPS - COMMUNICATION SKILLS -INFORMATION ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH TREATMENT OPTIONS NAMI MC SUPPORT GROUPS NAMI MC SIGNATURE PROGRAMS ALSO INCLUDE SUPPORT GROUPS. THE NAMI CONNECTION RECOVERY SUPPORT GROUP IS FOR INDIVIDUALS LIVING WITH A MENTAL HEALTH CONDITION AND THE NAMI FAMILY SUPPORT GROUP IS FOR LOVED ONES AND CAREGIVERS OF INDIVIDUALS LIVING WITH A MENTAL HEALTH CONDITION. SUPPORT GROUP ATTENDEES GAIN INSIGHT FROM HEARING THE CHALLENGES AND SUCCESSES OF OTHERS.
