Lower Shore Land Trust is dedicated to preserving rural lands, to promoting vibrant towns, and to building a more healthy and connected Eastern Shore.
LAND CONSERVATION: The Lower Shore Land Trust settled on 1 new donated conservation easement in 2019 permanently protecting 179.41 acres in Worcester County in the Coastal Bays watershed. During 2019, the organization was actively engaged in 11 other easement projects, with six projects in Somerset County including 1 wetland restoration easement, 1 donated easement, and 4 other purchased easements all totaling 1,462.1978 acres. There are 2 restoration/mitigation easements in Worcester County that total 19.8 acres and 3 purchased easements in Wicomico County totaling 556.681 acres.
STEWARDSHIP: Critical to upholding the terms of the easements, LSLT monitors each easement annually. LSLT staff and volunteers conducted 120 property visits on 20,908.09 acres. LSLT conducted an annual Land Steward training program for volunteers.
COMMUNITY OUTREACH: Outreach and education are crucial to the success of LSLT and the mission of the organization. LSLT participated in 11 community events and reached approximately 500 people providing education materials. We presented at 3 civic and community groups and reached approximately 150 people; hosted 4 educational workshops with over 75 people and hosted 2 community events with over 1000 combined attendees. LSLT produced and distributed 1200 newsletters two times during the year, developed a series of brochures on native plants, trees, and invasive species and worked with over 20 volunteers through the course of the year. LSLT received accreditation by the Land Trust Commission and was recognized as nonprofit of the year by the Wicomico Environmental Trust.
