POLICY RESEARCH AND ADVOCACY: SAALT ENGAGED IN POLICY ANALYSIS AND ADVOCACY ON KEY ISSUES AFFECTING SOUTH ASIANS, FROM CIVIL RIGHTS TO IMMIGRANT JUSTICE TO HATE VIOLENCE. SAALT PRESENTS SOUTH ASIAN EXPERIENCES AND EXPERTISE AT POLICY-MAKING TABLES WITH GOVERNMENT AGENCIES AND CONGRESSIONAL OFFICES AS WELL AS WITH NATIONAL ALLIES ACROSS COMMUNITIES OF COLOR. SAALT ALSO TRACKS POLICY DEVELOPMENTS AND RELEASES FACTSHEETS AND ISSUES BRIEFS ON IMMIGRATION, HATE VIOLENCE, AND CIVIL RIGHTS.SAALT'S POLICY ADVOCACY ALSO ENCOMPASSED ENGAGING THE GENERAL PUBLIC ON THE ABOVE ISSUES, AND INCLUDED PREPARING PUBLIC EDUCATION MATERIALS, ORGANIZING AND SPEAKING AT CONGRESSIONAL BRIEFINGS, AND ENGAGING PARTNERSHIPS - SIXTY-THREE SOUTH ASIAN COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS FROM 12 REGIONS THROUGHOUT THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA FORM A NATIONAL COALITION OF SOUTH ASIAN ORGANIZATIONS ("NCSO") WHICH IS COORDINATED BY SAALT. COALITION PARTNERS RANGE FROM MEMBER-LED ORGANIZATIONS, SOCIAL SERVICE PROVIDERS, AND VOLUNTEER COLLECTIVES THAT FOCUS ON A WIDE VARIETY OF ISSUES SUCH AS MENTAL HEALTH, DOMESTIC VIOLENCE, RACIAL AND RELIGIOUS PROFILING, WORKERS RIGHTS, AND HOUSING AND ECONOMIC JUSTICE.

COMMUNICATIONS: SAALT'S COMMUNICATIONS WORK IS FOCUSED ON INFORMING AND INFLUENCING THE NATIONAL DIALOGUE ON TRENDS IMPACTING SOUTH ASIANS TO MEDIA, STAKEHOLDERS, AND TO THE COMMUNITY TO INFLUENCE THE PERCEPTION ABOUT AND WITHIN SOUTH ASIAN COMMUNITIES IN THE UNITED STATES. SAALT WRITES OPINION EDITORIALS, MAINTAINS A WEBSITE, AND ENGAGES IN ELECTRONIC COMMUNICATIONS AND SOCIAL MEDIA OUTREACH.

PARTNERSHIPS: IN 2019, SAALT DEEPENED IT WORK ON IMMIGRANT DETENTION AND DENATURALIZATION, TWO UNDER-EXAMINED IMMIGRATION ISSUES IN THE SOUTH ASIAN AMERICAN COMMUNITY BROADLY. SAALT HELPED BUILD A COALITION OF NATIONAL AND LOCAL GROUPS FOLLOWING A VISIT TO EL PASO IN EARLY 2019 TO COORDINATE ADVOCACY BETWEEN THE LOCAL AND NATIONAL LEVELS, WHICH SUCCESSFULLY LED TO THE RELEASE OF TWO OF THE MEN. MOST IMPORTANTLY, IT ILLUMINATED THE NEED FOR INFRASTRUCTURE THAT COULD HELP RESPOND IN REAL TIME WHEN DETAINED INDIVIDUALS ARE IDENTIFIED IN A PARTICULAR FACILITY; DEPLOY LANGUAGE ASSISTANCE; AND IDENTIFY LEGAL SUPPORT FOR ASYLUM CASES AS WELL AS TO SEEK RECOURSE FOR CIVIL RIGHTS VIOLATIONS. IN 2019, SAALT RELEASED SEVERAL FACTSHEETS ON IMMIGRATION ISSUES RANGING FROM PUBLIC CHARGE TO DETENTION TO H-4 VISA WORK AUTHORIZATION AND THE IMPACT OF POLICY CHANGES IN THESE AREAS ON SOUTH ASIAN COMMUNITIES. WE HAVE CONTINUED TO MANAGE OUR PUBLIC, ONLINE DATABASE OF INCIDENTS OF HATE VIOLENCE AND XENOPHOBIC POLITICAL RHETORIC TARGETING SOUTH ASIAN, MUSLIM, SIKH, HINDU, MIDDLE EASTERN, AND ARAB AMERICANS NATIONWIDE. THIS DATABASE WAS ESTABLISHED IN NOVEMBER, 2015 IN ANTICIPATION OF THE VIOLENT BACKLASH AFTER THE ATTACKS IN SAN BERNARDINO AND PARIS AND THE LEAD UP TO THE 2016 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION. SINCE 2019, WE HAVE PRODUCED MONTHLY COMMUNITY UPDATES SUMMARIZING THE DATA AND IDENTIFYING EMERGING TRENDS. WE DISSEMINATE THOSE WIDELY OVER SOCIAL MEDIA FOR POLICYMAKERS, ADVOCATES, AND THE BROADER COMMUNITY.SAALT WORKS CLOSELY WITH NCSO PARTNER ORGANIZATIONS TO SUPPORT THEIR ADVOCACY AND BUILD POLICY CAPACITY TO HELP SERVE THEIR COMMUNITIES AND ALSO INFORM SAALT'S NATIONAL PRIORITIES. SAALT BRINGS NCSO MEMBERS TOGETHER THROUGH MONTHLY CALLS AND WEBINARS AND HOSTS IN-PERSON CONVENINGS IN WASHINGTON, D.C. WHEN POSSIBLE.
